Hi all,

I moved up here last year from Utah and will admit to being a long time BFT lurker (if anyone knows TubeDude he accused me of that when I said I read all his reports but never post) so I decided I should start contributing.

Came here for grad school and thought I'd have my nose in the books for a year but when the weather warmed up the fishing itch became unbearable so next trip to Utah I grabbed all my gear and have been exploring this new territory.

Been fishing everyday this week after class. First started off on the Portneuf fly fishing between McCammon and Inkom. There was a nice caddis hatch when it was warm/sunny on Tuesday and probably caught 20+ off the surface. Good fun, nothing of much size. Some holes seemed to hold tons of cookie cutter planters but none the less dry flying is always fun. Fished closer to Lava just south of town on wednesday, it was cloudy and cooler and had most success subsurface and honed in my streamer skills on some deeper holes.

Yesterday evening went to American Falls, I have a float tube but didn't get it out. No one fishing by the dam, maybe because it was threatening inclement weather on the horizon but the water was actually pretty nice looking. Decided to see what the hoopla below the dam is all about. There were many more people fishing both sides of the river. Saw a guy with a really nice trout on his stringer that was probably over 20". I'm not to familiar on how to fish this deep fast moving water for trout but it seemed like he was using light tackle with bait and not casting out very far. Seemed like you'd get hung up on rocks a lot or not be able to control where the current takes it very well. Any ideas on best techniques in this area, it was on the west side.

Drove over to the east side near dusk. There was an enormous caddis and midge hatch and fish were surfacing all over the place. Most sounded pretty small. I didn't take my fly rod so I decided to cast some jigs and spinners around. Managed several little small mouths, a large chub and one medium size in pic. I think I am going to go back tonight.

First pic is from portneuf
Second pic is little beach area of AF that is part of the res so no fishing there but I thought was a cool pic
Third pic is smallie caught below the dam
Fourth pic is actually from Chesterfield from two weeks ago camping with the family. Fished only from shore but really want to get back there in the tube

Welcome.

I don't much input for that area, sorry. The rainbow from CF looks like a nice one. I'll be it was a good eater.

Welcome to posting on BFT! I appreciate your taking the time to report. That is a nice sized smallmouth, and the Chesterfield trout looks down right yummy!

If you get a chance, talk to Rodger at Portneuf River Outfitters. He is an expert on the Portneuf and he can help you find more access areas. There are some nice browns in the lower part, but they are a little hard to find.

JeremyPeace also is a great resource for that area, you might PM him.

Good luck with grad school. A little fishing helps to clear the mind!

I would be more than happy to show you the ropes for the portneuf, im no expert but I have that river system pretty well figured out and know some very good spots. And some not so great spots.
