Just got back from my annual jaunt to Craig, MT and four days on the Missouri with my friend of 40+ years. Fished with Tim Linehan (Orvis Guide of the Year) and his guide service associate.

Flows were low, about 3,000 cfs - normal flow is about 5,000. PMD mayflies were very active from the Holter Dam down to Craig and caddis from there downstream. We only counted fish on one day, but we hooked 84 and landed almost half of them that day. Mixed browns and rainbows that averaged 17". We caught a lot of fish larger than than, with a couple of 20+ browns. I had one on that would have gone 24+ but - well, you know.

A quarter mile from our last takeout Thursday evening, I landed a perfectly colored 20" brownie. Tim took several "advertising" photos of its amazing spots and colors before I slipped it back home. With that, I pegged my #16 nymph and called it a trip.

Photos when Tim emails them to me. (I took none this trip -- WAY too busy fighting fish.)

Well, in balance, I didn't mention the typhoon...

Wednesday we had a near-miss lightning strike while floating. That night it rained so hard the guide's access road lost three FEET of gravel, and we saw lots of mud/rockslide scars the next day. We also shivered all through Thursday, fished eight miles of milky water, had soggy sandwiches, and STILL caught fish after fish after fish. Two years in a row now we've had Monday sunny, Tuesday cool, Wednesday stormy, and Thursday miserable.

New Motto: Day Four - Wear More.
