Did an early camping trip this year, and after the 95+ degree heat last week, it was a welcoming feel to return once again to the cooler temperatures of the high Uintas.
Camped at a place I have always spotted, but have never been able to snag along the Murdock Basin Road. Beautiful spot, and close to the brookie filled creek nearby. After a late, and slightly dark arrival on Thursday evening, Friday morning was welcomed with a warm sunshine, and a thirst for angling. We headed up to Lost Lake to try our luck. I had heard that there was a lot of winter kill, and low water levels last fall could have also played a hand in lower fish levels. WRONG! Lost Lake was, as usual, a bounty of fishing action. Between myself and the girlfriend we caught 15 fish (powerbait and worms).
The rainbows were skinny, and looked like they had just come out of wintering. The brookies (majority of what we caught) were all fat and healthy. Most of them were in the 8" - 10" category, and for brookies, that's a decent size in this guys opinion. The single cutthroat I managed was also on the lean size. All in all the winter doesn't seem to have impacted the trout populace much....at least not in Lost Lake. I didn't look at any other lakes, as the action at Lost was quick and we decided it was time to head back to camp for some lunch, and a nap.
After the nap, and before dinner, I decided to fish the few small holes of the nearby creek. I managed a handful of small brookies....the regular fare that I catch up higher in Broadhead Meadows.
Was bummed to learn that the batteries in my digital camera were drained, and we didn't have any backup AA's in the camping box. Guess I will need to keep a small stock of those on hand so that I can share the pics next time around.
