Does anyone know the best way to find out how much ice might be on a body of water?

Why I ask is I am taking the outdoor writer for the SL tribune on a ice fishing trip so he can do a story on it. He would like to do a trip to Moon Lake, even if we have to snowmobile in. Would calling the forest service in Duchesne be the best bet???? I am hoping to do it before Christmas.

I’ve also been interested in ice fishing Moon Lake. I’m hoping it will offer good action for nice splake. I doubt anyone can give you an accurate report on ice thickness because it changes daily, and I doubt them monitor it. But I’m sure it now has solid ice, and probably enough snow that access will be by snowmobile only. In fact, it’s probably necessary to fish it soon because the ice will get incredibly thick as the season progresses.

I really don't know anything about it, I just find the site by searching on Google.
