I have entered my slow season at work and though money is tight I have been blessed with lots of time for my favorite activities. Ill sart with a fathers day weekend camping trip with the ladies family to jordanelle.. I got there sat afternoon and the wind started we launched anyway and I managed a few bites but missed hooksets only landed one dinker bass before I couldn’t stand the wind anymore. I pulled my boat off the water and promised them we could try again in the morning. I ended the day by teaching my friends dog how to swim.. I thought she was going to kill me when I through the stick off the dock but we proved her dog could in fact swim and was a natural on the water she couldn’t get enough water fetch..
The following morning I got to take both her and her dad out on the lake for some good bass action for the first half of the day and then went home to spend the rest with my father.
We tied into many like this… And the glasses are pink cause mine fell in the drink attempting to anchor my boat so I borrowed some
And quite a few like this…
She got the hang of it and eventually out fished us all especially since I was trying the fairy wand with no success .. I had one take I missed but that was it for my fly try… And I actually tried a lot this time. Dad got some fathers day love too.
The next trip was a 3 day backpacking trip to none other than the uinta mountains. I have a terrible addiction. We arrived at a beautiful creek I flung a few fingerlings and managed some more okay small brookies with dry fly practice before we got bored dropped our packs and went exploring.. Came across a lake I had high hopes for but I blanked out on this one tried for about 1.5 hours with no success saw a coule large splashes to give me hope that was it…. It was a beautiful water and I noticed it was absolutely infested with red shiners .. guess the uintas needs another lake with splake and tigers to try to help that..
We arrived at our destination and felt the pressure to catch some fish for dinner as we lightly packed food this trip and were banking on a catch to make fish tacos. After receiving some criticism for being entered in the fly contest but showing more confidence in the spinning rod, I opted to switch it up and have confidence this trip I led with the fly rod and pretty well neglected the spinning rod. It wasn’t fast fishing but we did manage enough fish for our fish tacos using flies
The next morning we awoke to the excitement of something I believe has become a bit of a tradition mmmmmmmmm
We set out on our journey to explore the basin the uintas have such amazing beauty.. the cloud pic shows the bug infestation. And for those that are wondering the biting insects are showing up in full force…
We struck out at pretty much all of our destinations and if it weren’t for the view my discouragement would have found the best of me… But then we wandered back toward camp only to find a couple of too tempting step over creeks . We walked it real slow looking for signs of life… I was expecting the same small brookes and cutties as the creeks from before but then we saw a couple dark shadows in a deep pool. The bodies didn’t look like brookes?? Were they grayling or possibly mountain suckers??? James was the first to investigate and drifted a red copper john at them and bam! Fish on! He pulled out his best grayling to date a very fat healthy beautiful fish.
I finally got my rod in and slammed his friend on a copper john my best grayling to date! I scrambled dumped my pack for my tape for the fly contest and then realized I left it in my other pair of pants at camp! Doh! I took this picture which Im sure wont count but being my best grayling I feel it will be fin to enter anyways. I coulda killed him and got to my tape but I didn’t feel like hauling it around the mountain in the hot sun. I quickly sent him back home! Still buzzing from my catch I walked the creek only spotting a couple more but none were interested in our offerings.. We then got chased back to camp by some building weather. When we were hit by winds from a microburst we dicided it was time to go get lunch.
On the way back to get lunch I found lots more evidence that this was by far one of the most abused and trashy places I have ever been in the uintas period… This was all left at one campsite. There was crap like this all over.
On the plus side my hike back I got a big rock spider to cooperate for a photo! They usually vibrate super fast and shake there web when you get close avoiding a good pic. A moose had also wandered out into the lake we temporarily called home. She was happily grazing off the bottom of the lake for quite some time..
After lunch I was torn on wanting to hike back to find more grayling but instead opted to hit the creeks around camp to just relax. We used this as an opportunity to practice our dry fly skills. I caught too many creek sized brookies to count before hanging up the rod for the rest of the trip. Though I felt defeated in all my high hopes for day trips the creek fishing saved the trip. Also it was hard to complain I had good company and greater views. Caught 4 species in one trip and set personal best grayling. We caught cutts brooke tout grayling and tiger trout. I would say in the end it was a success.
