Went in to Shoshone Lake yesterday with friends and my son. Made it in ok about noon. Got out fishing and before I got my son and I in the water my buddy had a fish on! That unfortunately was the highlight for him. Me on the other hand had a much more productive time. My son managed to land 2 macs in the next 20 minutes or so! On a jig I had poured and then tied up like an egg sucking leach no less! My son was ecstatic. That 20 inch fish was easily the biggest fish he has ever caught. I managed to land 4 fish and lose several others and my son landed 2 more over the next couple hours before the winds kicked up and those of us with fly rods couldn't strip line fast enough to keep slack out of the line d/t the wind drift. In the end the fishing wasn't fast and furious, but it was fun and my son really wants to do it again.

On other news I asked the rangers at the visitors center in West about the rules concerning tube jigs. They didn't know if that is considered an artificial bait or not. I then asked them about the conflicting data on macs in Shoshone lake. In Yellowstone lake it is very clear you are to kill all lake trout. However the regs show that in Shoshone lake the limit is up to 5 trout of all types except cuts which are catch and release. The rangers however were saying to kill all macs. When asked about this they said they are being told to tell people to kill all lake trout. Go figure. I guess that's what happens when you have the govt. running things.

nice ! I was able to fish both Yellowstone and Lewis lake this past week as well. Caught a lot of macs and some monster cutties (on Yellowstone) and a couple good sized browns (on Lewis). This is a great time to fish the lakes in the park!

Isn't it great when you put fish in a lake, let them grow and thrive for decades, and then ask everyone to kill them. I have had a lot of people tell me that you are supposed to kill the lake trout in Jackson Lake here in Grand Teton park. This is NOT true. Jackson lake is a lake trout fishery. 90 percent of the fish in that lake are lake trout. T hey have stocked it with lakers since the 70s, and just stopped it in 2006. This was due to great natural reproduction and a healthy population. If you fish Jackson Lake please release the bigger fish. Lets keep it a place where you can go and catch a huge trout in some awesome scenery.
