Guys, so a friend of mine is going camping north of Lava Hot Springs along the Portneuf. I'd like to get him into some fish on the fly up there, any suggestions? Nymphs, dries, streamers?
Thanks in advance for the info!

Jeremy, you out there?

I would go for streamers first and nymphs second, maybe some drys in the more riffly sections. There are mostly browns and rainbows in the area above Lava, and the holes are deep. Most of the time you want to get your fly down into those deep holes.
Good luck!

You can also try calling Rodger at Portneuf River Outfitters in Pocatello. He lives in that area too.

Yeah im out there way out there. [crazy] when are yall thinking your going to hit the river? Ive got a hole or so I could show you that will keep you entertained. The river is pretty packed with plant life right now. Yanking streamers has always done me well.
There are a couple guys who are doing alright with nymphs still, not me though but then again I strip streamers and throw terrestrials.
Just let me know when and ill throw you a spot.

I will be fishing near the Big Springs turn-off in the am and pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. What strategy do you suggest? Which flys/nymphs/streamers should I have with me?

All of them [cool], Well here is some info for that particular spot, I was just there, and it.is running supper high ad in it is chest deep where it is normaly hip deep, there is a ton and I mean a ton of shrub and weed in the water, as far as flys go bring a good assortment of drys and wets, it will be very difficult to.nymph there right now, and as for streamers, ill tell you dark colors, and dark colors you wouldnt think of. Got to remember them fish in that area get hammered on and spook extra easy, and if you make one mistake with your cast chances are no fish.
Have fun, good luck, and be safe that spot is very high right now.

Would you suggest a different section where I might find conditions a little more favorable? I'm not beyond driving a little for a better chance to catch fish.

The river is high all over from lava up. And very mossed up. It is all fishing ok its been very off and on.

If you were camping in that area, where would you go to catch fish? On the river or maybe Chesterfield res?

If I were camping in the area, and wanted to.catch fish, I would fish the river. Chesterfield is so low and dropping. I mean the river is still fishable just a little difficult right now. Lots of silt built up and lots of green in the water, water is a little higher than previous years which makes wading a little harder. And fishing is a little harder, but doable

Welcome to BFT. If you have kids, or want to catch some 8-12in fish in a small stream, then you could camp up at Pebble Cr---
