I took my two oldest boys fishing the other day in a place we duck hunt. I thought it would be fun to catch one of the big carp we see and only brought hotdogs for bait. My 11 year old got on the board first when he caught a turtle. My 13 year old followed that up with a surprise when he caught this cat fish. I imagine all those ponds in near Ogden Bay that have carp have catfish in them too. I wonder about what other species are out there swimming around.

I have caught many fish there including carp, bluegill, bullhead and channel catfish, sunfish, largemouth bass, small mouth bass, and a few perch.
Me and my buddies go there pretty often and do very well on most days and very bad on others worms work the best we have caught 100+ on some days.

Thanks, I'd be tempted to trade one of your brookies for this guy. However, I doubt my son would trade. He has shown the pictures to everyone that he meets.

Very nice fish, did you get a weight or measure on that hog? Nice job, and you caught a turtle too? What kind and what did you do with it? Crazy trip. Later J

That's a nice alley cat

Hey, finding overlooked gems in plain sight is something I really enjoy and it looks as if you did just that.
Way to go.
(For what it's worth, my biggest channel was only about 10".)

It was tough to weigh him, but he was 28 inches long and the scale we have was not designed for fish. It kept sliding off and seemed to be in the 12 + area.
I think the turtle is a box turtle. Here is a picture of it and the another of the carp. What an ugly fish.

Definitely not a box turtle, they are actually members of the tortoise family and don't tend to go in water. It's hard to tell from the pic for sure, but it kind of looks like a red bellied turtle of some sort. Or it could just be a red eared slider. Did it have red patches behind the eyes?

Nice day out, I didn't know there were turtles around here that surprises me. Congrats. J

Yes it had red behind the ears.

Sounds like it was a red eared slider then. They are commonly sold as pets. Someone must have gotten tired of theirs and released it.
