Mission accomplished! I had previously posted about how I was going to take my nephew out for his first ever fishing trip and how I wanted it to make a good impression.
Headed out to the Bubble Up in my Nucanoe (kayak/canoe hybrid) with two of my nephews, one 16 the other 9. The kitties came to play today. It just took a little bit to find out where they were and they seemed to be all congregated in one place. Luckily the buoys make for nice placement markers.
The pipe was partially exposed on our way out, but by the end of the day it was fully covered. Never seen the "tide" shift like that.
Anyway it was when we anchored and cast our poles out in three different directions that we discovered where they were. It started out with my little nephew saying "hey I thinking I'm getting something" With skepticism, knowing how little kids like to fabricate getting bites, I held his pole and sure enough I set the rod and fish on. I could tell right away that it wasn't a monster and he reeled in a nice little mudder. Of course I wasn't going to tell him that he just caught the lower end of the catfish spectrum and played it up like he had saved the day by getting the skunk off and put the little guy on the stringer for fear it was all the action we would get.
Shouldn't have done that bc from that point it really picked up. Bait of choice seemed to be minnows over worms. I also spent a good while chucking a curly tail and spinner for WB to no avail. Ended up catching a total of 9 Channels and 2 mudders in the next hour and a half and had to end earlier than I had liked to get to a family gathering.
I don't know much about the catfish spawn but some of the fat ones were full of eggs. Felt a little bad about keeping them had I known the spawn was on, or approaching but they did fry up nicely. []
Thanks for the advice TubeDude, I think I saved a generation of fishermen in my family.
