I made it out a couple of times this week for some largemouth fishing. Overall it was pretty slow fishing. I did get some pretty nice ones though. A couple were caught shallow on a Texas rigged, unweighted stick worm. Those two went absolutely nuts when hooked (as evidenced by the water on my lens). The first jumped completely out of the water at least six times, the other did a crazy tail walk that covered a good 5-6 feet.

I got one good one on a dropshot out in deeper water. She was a thick, muscular fish that put up quite the battle on 6lb line.

I got a couple more good ones on deep diving cranks out in deeper water. They had my crankbait rod doubled over and were stripping off line like crazy. They didn't jump at all and just bulldogged.

I caught a bunch of dinks and a few more in the 14-15" range, but the ones I posted were the best ones.
Despite the rain we've been getting, I'm pretty worried about the water levels at most of these places. I really hope we don't have any more die offs this year [frown]

That is a beautiful sight to behold!

I saw one pelican, but there's still quite a bit of water this time, so I'm not too worried. Yet. I did see this guy though.[inline "loon 3 small.jpg"]

I've never seen loons around here this late in the year. He seemed to be a loaner, and he never called, so I'm guessing he was the only one. I always enjoy seeing them, so this was a treat.

Just so you know, it was two different waters. One was faster than the other, but those first two big girls were at the place I assume you're thinking of. I need to hit it again when it isn't 100 degrees and glassy calm.

Good to see there's still a little water left in there. I'm with you I hope the die off is minimal or it's going to be another 5 years before it starts to come back again.

In comparing the pictures from last year to this year, there was about 10 feet less water last year. Granted, I haven't been up there since, and last year it was like they pulled a plug and it was dropping at least five feet a week. Hopefully with the thunderstorms we've been getting this year the lakes will survive. If they do, the fishing should actually get pretty good here in the next couple of years for larger fish.

Check out this monster out of the Missouri river in south Dakota .

That is a beast! Did you guys have to trade off in shifts while fighting it? [laugh]

I managed it, barely, but I managed it..
the Missouri is a pretty sweet fishing hole.. I caught more rock bass and small mouth than I could swing a stick at. And a ton of yellow cats and a few channels. Almoast had a turtle also. It kept diving after my crank, and ill tell you buying new fishing gear out of town is no fun I really wish I had my stuff back home, had to buy a whole new arsenal of gear, now im in north Dakota and plan on fishing here shortly.. After we finish cutting this field of barley, im hauling barley for budweiser.

That sounds like fun. I do miss that variety you find back east where you may catch any of a myriad of species while you're fishing. Was there any size to the smallmouth (besides the one pictured of course [
])?

There was a couple around 16" and seen one dead floating that was around 18 or so. I watched a guy pull in a 15 pound channel cat and another guy pull in a nice pike. I scene some real dandy bass chase my gear but I faild to hook them..

Sounds like fun. Those river smallies fight so hard. I just wish they wouldn't blow out The Bear all summer so I could fish it without getting a pile of moss on my line every cast.
