I am a proud new gun owner as of this year! With that being said my wife is terrified of it... So I want to do a safety course with her so she can feel comftorble with it. Anybody taken one or have suggestions? Also looking to do my concealed carry so any reccomendations for that is much appreciated also. Thanks!

Well I appreciate you "googling that for me" I have already looked into that myself... What I was looking for were reccomendations from folks who have taken some classes. There are a million choices and wanted to know people's thoughts. As you know google isn't always a reliable source

I work at Impact Guns in Ogden, we offer concealed carry classes. As far as the gun safety class I'm not sure but I know they do cover lots of basic gun safety in the concealed carry class.

I took mine at Doug Shoot and Sports, The instructor is pretty straight forward guy, The first part is all lecture explains to you gun laws and what you can and cant do.
The second part is demonstrating gun safety, how to fire and reload the weapon safely All the weapons training part is done downstairs on there gun range. Not sure what area you live in but Dougs is on 50th S, and redwood.

There is an NRA FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation class in Ogden on 7/20/2013. This link will show you the listing for the class. Click this class, scroll to the bottom and type in your zip code and select within 100 miles. The class will then be shown for Ogden. Click on the details link and it will give you the contact information. The cost is listed as $65 for the 3 hour long class.

Randy Watt is a tier 1 instructor. His background is exceptional. People fly all over the Country for instructors of this caliber, not knowing we have one here in UT. Here is his web site.

I'm seeing two different issues here.
1. Your wife needs to take a basic firearms course of some sort.
2. A concealed carry course for yourself.
These are very different, though related, things. The suggestion of an NRA First Steps course for pistol, rifle, or shotgun would be really good for your wife. It'll teach her safe gun handling, teach her how to shoot, and get rid of some of the negative mistique that she has towards guns. I'm an NRA Certified instructor in Rifle, Shotgun, and Muzzleloading rifle but at this point I only do courses for scouts because of time constraints. The pistol course in Ogden sounds like it would be good.
For a concealed carry course, there are tons of them out there. I took mine from Chad (mumblemumble) at CAL Ranch in Spanish Fork a while ago. I can't remember his last name at the moment.
The reason I think your wife should do one of the First Steps courses is that she'll actually handle a gun and learn to shoot one type of gun. It teaches gun safety, basic shooting technique, and gun maintenance. When I took the Shotgun Instructor course and learned how to teach shotgun shooting, my own shooting improved immensely. The CFP class doesn't have any shooting or gun handling associated with it, but does teach basic safety. Good course, but not the best for your wife. Yet. When she starts asking things like "where's mine?" when you bring another gun home, then she'll be ready for the CFP class. [cool]

great info thanks guys! It seems like Doug's does safety and ccw in one class. Sounds like the best option for me since its right by my house. A friend on mine also mentioned he knows a guy who is nra certified that comes to your house and does if for groups. Either way i now have some good options. Thanks again all!

1. All guns are always loaded.
2. Keep your finger off the trigger until you have a made a conscious decision to fire.
3. Never let your muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy or pay for.
4. Be sure of your target, backstop and beyond.
Simple rules, break one of them and your dumb, break 2 of them and someone loses and eye.

No offense to remo or any other cop on the forum, do not ever assume they are competent or safe with a firearm. Range days with LE folks, I wear body armor and any honest range officer will agree (and is likely also wearing armor) with me on this. Cops are no different than anyone else when it comes to firearms, some are very proficient, some should be fired for their inability to shoot. The fact that Remo knows the fundamentals of safety with a firearm puts him above a lot of other officers IMHO. Go shoot with any which live in your neighborhood, it will likely scare the crap out of you.

Cops are just like anyone else, weapons handling and accuracy are perishable skills and need to be practiced, practiced, practiced until muscle memory makes it an afterthought.

One tidbit that has always stuck with me when I went to my first CCR class. Instructor was 35+ year LEO. Clearly stated, he said that shooting someone will cost you $10,000 on average in legal fee's and what not, even if you are in the right.
Don't point it unless ready to use it.

For your wife , you may also consider the DWR hunter safety coarse. It is inexpensive and a good class for basic gun safety

I took mine and have ccw because of Dougs. Biught several firearms from them as well.

Only if you are charged with a crime and have to go to court and defend yourself, just because you shoot someone doesn't automatically bring any charges.
I guess I could see a civil suit though.

He was entirely referring to legal fees. Wrongful death civil suits are everywhere.
Side note, Zimmerman's legal bill was over $750k
