I took the motorized tube up to Deer Creek this morning for some early top-water action.

Between 6AM and 8:15AM I caught 31 SMB and 1 LMB... all on Pop-R's.

Most the SMB were in the 8-10 inch class with a couple nice 12-inchers.

The LMB was 13.5" -- and a real blast to fight in the tube.

Thanks to those who chipped in with advise on my last thread. I was hammering them this morning. It was really, really fun.

What no pics? Bass are fun to catch. Especially on top waters.[cool]

Yeah, I was not happy about no pics.

My camera battery was dead.

But I probably wouldn't have taken more than one or two anyway, those quick morning trips for me are all about getting the fishing Jones sated before work Smile

I hit Deer Creek this morning and only caught 1 bass. I was a little disappointed. I've never used poppers before. I watched a few videos on YouTube of hillbillies using them in swamps and tried to immitate their retrieve. I switched it up a lot. Slower, faster. Long pauses, single pops, triple pops. What does a good retrieve for deer creek look like? I've never fished for bass before. Any help or other lures to try would be much appreciated.
Thanks

The topwater bite just might be slowing down, it comes and goes. I fished it Sunday and caught most my fish on plastics, only a few on top.

i have fished deer creek the last 4 days and all I can get them on is top water and crank baits... caught 2 on plastics and that is all. today I caught 18 on top water and one on a plastic. what I have found best is to pop it along the bank about 2 feet off the bank and not away from the bank not all were caught that way but I would say 75% were caught popping it fallowing the bank. also I fish the island one day the train tracks over by charleston another walsberg the next and the track's again today..... I work it really slow with a pop here or a pop there than a good 3 or 4 pops and let it sit and count to 8 than start random pops again. after first cast I count to 10 before I pop it or move it. ill be up there again tomorrow hope I can keep it up

I've also noticed most of my hits come:

1) As soon as the pop-R hits the water within 1 foot of the shoreline

and

2) When it is sitting still

I think Patience is a big part of it.

That's cool. Crazy plastics were tough for ya between the 2 of is we caught at least 60 fish on plastics. I threw cranks for a half hour or so with nothing. Only a few plastics were working well though. Come to think of it I was probably fishing the topwaters way too fast. A few weeks ago that's what they wanted for sure caught a few better fish that way
