How much wind is too much at UL and which wind direction is the worst?

Thanks.

[#0000FF]That is a subjective thing. Depends on how you are fishing...boat, bank, toon or tube. Safety is the first consideration. You should never be out in wind strong enough to build waves big enough to swamp your craft...or blow you to the other end of the lake. But if it is not strong enough to be dangerous it can still be problematic.

I like to fish light tackle and cast light jigs...as well as dragging bait behind my tube. If the wind is so strong I can't fish effectively I leave the lake.

The wind can also be either good or bad...depending on direction and strength. Sometimes the best place to fish is where the wind is blowing onshore and stacking up the bugs and minnows. At other times that spooks the fish from the shallows and they go out deeper.

As a general rule, I like to fish the southern part of the lake...Lincoln Beach...when there is a mild south or southwest breeze...up to about 5-7 mph. When the wind blows offshore it flattens the water and it clears up a bit. When the wind blows in from the north it muddies the waters along the south end of the lake and for some reason the fishing is usually not as good down there in a north breeze.

If there are "gentle" breezes from any point north, you can often find sheltered fishing along the northern shoreline. And a north breeze is not such a bad thing from Lindon around to Pelican Bay.

It always pays to check several sources of forecasts...the day before a trip and the morning before you leave. Those forecasts can change. They can also be 100% wrong...with both the wind speed and direction being completely different than the forecast. In fact, that is more common than accurate forecasts on UL. I think that lake makes its own weather out in the middle and then shoots the nasty stuff toward anglers all around the lake.

I was there on Sat night in my kayak. A good breeze kept me at a good drift and kept the bugs/mosquitos off. But after only 30 mins the south wind went from 5-7mph to easily over 10+mph. Being alone at night, I scrambled back to the harbor. Did not get 1 bite!

As soon as you see it start to white cap that's when I say so... too many people loose their lives or get into big danger and trouble on that lake and its better safe than sorry there. I have been on the lake and it go from no wind to 3-4 foot swells in 5-10 min. not a fun thing when your on a toon and in the middle of the lake......

The websites said it was 18-20 yesterday. Fishing was a no-go but we anchored and tried to swim. It felt like we were in the damn ocean!!!

Thanks for all of your input!!
