Best Bites
Striped Bass - We're pretty much on the typical August schedule, slow start and hopefully a strong finish with bigger bass. Still a fair number of bass and some good sized ones on the local reefs, mostly on live bait. Bunker days, eels night. Long Sand Shoal isn't on every day, but it's a worthwhile shot most days. Fresh bunker chunks is the most effective way to fish if you don't have live ones.
There's been some schoolies to medium sized bass along the Old Lyme shore for eel casters. The Race has had some bass also if you can get through the blues and the winds.
Big question this week, where's the small bait?
We've seen a lot of bunker this season, but lately we're not seeing birds working over smaller baitfish. Anyone have any input?
Bluefish - They're getting thicker at the Race and Gut with some surface action. Trollers are getting them on umbrellas and drifters are doing well with diamond jigs. They're showing up at Hatchetts and Southwest as well.
The bunker schools in the Connecticut River are attracting some blues but we're not hearing of any fast action this week.
Snapper Blues - Shaping up to be a good run. Most areas where there is the slightest rip or bit of a current in an estuary is holding snappers.
Try the DEP Piers, Causeway, Lieutenant and Blackhall Rivers.
Fluke - A lot of whining this week. The short ratio keeps climbing and even the overall numbers in the catch keeps declining. Montauk has been off, Block is OK but still has some shorts. Waterford is OK but you still have to pick through the shorts and get away from the dogfish. The Connecticut and Niantic Rivers have had some better fishing than their adjacent waters and not getting too heavily fished and never dragged. May be time to stay closer.
The Black Point depths are giving up a few doormats but no giants and as always you have to put in your time, and a lot of it to reap any reward.
The Tri-Shop Fluke Contest has started, call us 860-388-2283, Hillyers 860-443-7615 or the Fish Connection 860-885-1739 for details.
1st - Rich Reicherl - 10.70#
2nd - Mark Sharoyer - 10.50#
3rd - Sam Dibner - 9.95#
Porgies - Getting better each week. Most every reef has some population of scup. Bartletts and Hatchetts are the biggest and most heavily fished, but don't ignore the smaller rockpiles.
Blue Crabs - I'd have to rate it as very good. A good ratio of keepers, especially in deeper water. The coves on the Connecticut, Mystic and Thames Rivers report very good catches.
Blackfish - No reports came in this week.
