Check out this pic of what would have been a new state record wiper had it been turned in! This fish was taken at night and weighed in at a whopping 13 pounds...interestingly, the guy who caught it claimed to also have caught one that weighed in at around 17 pounds!

Beautiful fish. I can only imagine the fight that fish must have given.[Smile]

Where'd that fish come from, Lahontan Res. in Nevada?

Probably the same guy that caught a couple of 10 lbers, not long ago. I guess it took a while for one of the local guys to figure out how to catch those big boys because if they are that big in there, they have been in there for a number of years. Awesome fish for sure thanks for sharing the pic W&B, what a hog.

Dang that one nice wiper!

I've heard tales of fish pulling poles right out of peoples hands... Now I know what causes that to happen... Nice Fish... Was it a Willard Fish? Thanks for showing us the prize... J

that's a southern utah fish.

With wipers going into reservoirs like Minersville, Otter Creek, and Piute, Willard Bay's tenure as the state record holder will end in the near future I am afraid. I believe Otter Creek and Minersville will eventually pump out some monsters...!

A few years back that kinda happened to me we were fishing the South Dike near that little Island in back, I had my rod wedged into rocks pretty good, walked up on the dike to stretch my legs next thing I knew my rod was being dragged down the rocks

Tried to make a mad dash down the rocks but hopping form boulder to boulder there could easily make for some busted knees and into drink it went.

Tried for hours throwing heavy sinkers and 2/0 hooks to try to retrieve it but no luck ..; bye bye rod and reel [frown]

Not near the south dike, but I had a first-ever find a while back. I had snagged up on something and was able to move it albeit slowly. When I finally got up a length of limb, I saw a tangle of line and a fish skeleton at the other end of it. Line extended out from there, and I somehow knew that there'd be a rod and reel at the end of that. Sure enough, there was!

But it had been in the lake long enough to make it not worth salvage. I brought the whole mess (less the skeleton) back and tossed it into a dumpster.

Nice wiper but the fish is only 29 inches ? There is no way it is going to weigh 13lbs.

17lbs is a little hard to believe also. I would like to meet this famous giant wiper man. Ask him to join BFT. Smile

Nice, I pulled up a Ice fishing outfit out of Strawberry last year the reel was so rusted over I did the same chucked it in the dumpster.

I have to confess I've lost a couple rods to carp in my day as well. It's been awhile so I'm probably due to do it again soon. Had a buddy in the boat taking care of some private business when something got his rod, but we were able to snag and retrieve it. No fish though. Later J

How can ya tell, does it talk with a drawl? No sorry bad joke... I imagine if the lakes have lighter pressure the fish will get a bunch larger, that would be fun... I see those big wiper in the Bass Pro tanks in Oklahoma City and they sure look like fun to catch... Later J

it has nothing to do with pressure. It has everything to do with environment. Think about it for about 5 seconds: 1.....2....3....4....5. Did it hit you?

How deep is Willard Bay?
How warm does that water get in the summer
Is that good for those fish?

Now look at Newcastle, Minersville, Piute, Otter Creek.
Deeper water makes for cooler areas of relief from too warm water in the summer months. And, throw in the forage base and you have a recipe for big wipers. These reservoirs are just better habitat for them. The trick is going to be catching them....

that fish has more than 19" of girth on it!!

maybe. I kind of question it too. But, what I don't question is the anglers claim to have caught another wiper that was larger than the wiper in the picture, which is 29" long. So, while both estimates (13lbs, 17lbs) might be a tad of a stretch, there is no question in my mind that he caught at least 1 fish larger than the current state record. There are some pigs in that lake right now.

I agree with this reply.
I wish the guy would come forward and join I just want to see some more of his fish porn. [Wink] That is a nice wiper and if he has caught a bigger one I would have liked to see the picture of that one.
the fish is actually around 28" he has the 1" mark at the mouth. Zoom in on the picture using CTRL+ Mouse scroll up or down

well.....

here's the thing. The guy caught the big fish first. He didn't have a camera. He let the fish go. He decided to go fish again the next night, but took a camera (and tape) this time. He caught the second fish (28" give or take). He took a picture this time, then let the fish go.

I don't know who he sent the picture to. Someone then passed it to the DWR biologists in the southern region, who then contacted the angler. They asked they angler specifically "why didn't you submit it as a state record?", to which the angler replied "I don't give a damn about that".

So asking this guy to join a web site to discuss and share fishing related info.......I just don't see it happening.

yes. both fish he caught were released...

I don't know a thing about those other ponds so I'm looking to learn. Problem for me is they are outside my roaming area. But I hope they do well there. But I still believe pressure is a factor as well. Later J
