Was out on the Bear river the other night in Corinne and I saw all sorts of little fish boiling. I was just wondering what was going on because I don't fish it that often. I didn't even do that well, only a couple of small catfish.

That's cool, you can even see a bubble! Hmm, wonder what kind they were. Were they small like 3-5inches, flat and silvery? Wonder if they could be shad. Don't think any Wipers would be schooling them up, but could image other predators having a go at it.

Seen swarms of em up by the pumphouse, so sure if they made it all the way up there, they are certainly downstream too.

If I had to guess I would say they were 2" max. I tried casting into the middle of them for fun, but didn't get a bite. I just thought it was weird...

I have been seeing the bass doing something like that up my way on the Bear.... That would be LMB and SMB not wipers... However, when I cast into the boils I get hit 90% of the time... But I'm not seeing that big of boils either and they are not sustained long enough to take pictures of, I hardly have time to cast at them... They may be Yotes shad instead of carp or fatheads that I find above Cutler.. Pretty cool though.... Later J

Hey man - they're not MY Shad! I just took a picture of it to find out what they were. Too bad we can't use 'em for bait though, think you're kitties would enjoy chomping down on those dragged around! They're so tall and flat - probably look like an ale-wife fluttering abouts.

I have seen schools of fatheads get spooked up by something taking a run through. Even heard you could fling gravel to mimic panicked minnows, and get Crappie attacking. Don't think rocks would could as chum?
I was still surprised you found shad in the Bear River below Cutler. I think they need wipers there to control the shad. Guess the walleye and cats probably do okay keeping them in check. Funny how things change and move around. Oh and I didn't mean to imply it was your bait or anything. Just that you pointed it out. I had no idea they were that close to here.

I think if shad were legal bait they would be great, but for now I'm scared to even let a fish puke one up on my boat. Did I mention I caught a few fish on minnows including one of the big crappie. The few minnows I found were really small and I didn't think they would work with the hook bigger than the minnow, but they still hit it.

Well got to run. J

There's a pretty healthy population of smallmouth down below there too, so I'm sure they chomp on their fair share of shad too.

Yes that is true for sure those bass are agressive feeders on those minnows.... Getting lots of predators out there these days.... That's good by me.... Later J
