Fished Powell 3 days 15-17 September. It was really slow fishing for smallmouth and largemouth bass. It really stormed a the week before our trip, so I was thankful we got in some solid fishing, with no major wind to fight.
On the way down we had an issue with a bolt on the trailer coming loose and freakishly rubbing the sidewall of a tire. I noticed the rubber scrapings on the boat, and thought it was mud until I felt it. Long story short, we found a place just north of Hanksville that had trailer tires and got a new one mounted. I'm just glad it didn't blow while out on the road.
Also, my boat started up just fine (inboard) but wouldn't run faster than a crawl. Seemed like a fuel delivery problem. Long strory short, kept revving it and trying to go faster, and it finally cleared itself. Don't know if it is an intermittent problem, because we never found the cause, but it ran fine after the first day.
Persistance paid off and We finally found a spot that held a bunch of fish. We had a ton of bites along a point that was partially out of the water and ran about 100 yards out from the shore. Hooked about 15 fish and boated about 10 of them. Mostly smallmouth, but one striper was in the mix, and we got a Walleye to the boat and it early released. My brother lost several and then I saw his hook was bent out about 30 degrees. We had a good laugh on that one.
A last note for those planning trips this fall. We saw a bunch of little islands, rocks, that are just under the water surface. we were super careful, but almost ran our outdrive into one of them that we were fishing. Be super aware when running or when fishing structure of prop and outdrive busters.
Tight lines!
