Yes, I know this is the Utah board....I have posted to the Oregon board with no response. The Oregon board looks pretty dead.
I am wondering if anyone has had any experience fishing for Kings in Oregon. I maybe headed that way next week depending on the weather. I am looking for any suggestions in regards to areas and charters. Tillamook bay has my attention...any other ideas??

[#502800]Fish the Nehalem river at Wheeler, just above Rockaway Beach.[/#502800]
[#502800]Check with John Krauthoefer at Firefighters Guide Service in Tillamook ....... He would be pretty busy this time of year, but you never know.[/#502800]

I can't give you advice on salmon in Oregon, but I live in the Tri-Cities WA and there's all sorts of salmon fishing (and catching...) going on now on the Columbia and some of the smaller rivers too. Your drive would also be 5 hours shorter...
I definitely get the draw of the coast, I was in Tillamook this summer myself, but if it's kings you're after - and numbers of them - there's lots here. I can't say they'll all be fit for the barbeque, but they'll bend your rod like nobodies business.

Good luck wherever you end up!

Thanks Wavewolf. I read your post earlier this year and have looked at John's website. I think I will give him a call and see if he has any openings or suggestions if he is busy.

Thanks Iliketofish....I have considered that possibility as well. I have done some web searching about the subject without as much success as the coast fishing. I think the chances of catching a big king are better in Tillamook but as you say drive time will be longer.
I have a trip to Tillamook planed for next August and have fished the Oregon coast several times but have never targeted King Salmon. I'll bet you miss the salmon fishing!!!

[#502800]During the month of October, Garibaldi Charters runs a deep reef boat out for ling cod, and they put out crab pots on the way out.......Save a day for that.[/#502800]

I was just up in Portland for a wedding last Saturday and stayed on the coast(Lincoln City) and as customary for me to Sneak away and fish for a couple hours. The kings were in and fishing well in the Siletz river and Salmon river. This was my first time to the coast as well and my regret was not bringing my own gear. we stopped by Bonneville dam on the way back and there are record numbers of chinook running up the Columbia this year. I did not have any luck but I didn't exactly have cast friendly gear to work with either but I gave it my best. I'd give it a shot if I were heading back up but I couldn't find many local guides for salmon except finally a little mooring dock and fish shop on the Siletz just off the coastal highway. Nice folks and I heard the guide was having success the morning I walked in for some tips and gear. http://www.siletzmoorage.com/boatrentals

Thanks for the report. Sounds like you had a nice trip. I had a look at the link. This is a good possibility. I am still waiting to see how everything comes together. A lot is still up in the air for me right now. I had an accident and had surgery for a partially detached retina. I am waiting to see how my eye sight is. I have a gas bubble in my eye to hold the retina in place that makes it difficult to see. The bubble will be dissolved in a couple of days and then I will decide.
Thanks again for taking the time to help.
