I thought this might interest some of you. Good to see that they are getting a mix of male and female brookies now.

So you are guaranteed to catch a smaller fish[laugh][laugh][laugh]

Funny they are dumping a bunch more fish in there. I was under the impression that is why they are not as big....over population. Interesting.[crazy]
And what about the streams feeding more fish in?

I certainly don't know the answers on that one. But the next SEIFF mt has the fishery biologist from there coming. Anyone is welcome to come to the meeting as long as there is room!

[black]The November 14th meeting for the Southeast Idaho Fly Fishers will offer a presentation by Jessica Buelow. Jessica is a Regional Fisheries Biologist for the Idaho Department of Fish and Game in the Upper Snake Region at Henry’s Lake, where she runs the Henry’s Lake Fish Hatchery, conducts fishery surveys on the lake, and serves as the Fisheries Habitat Biologist for the region. She is well traveled, with previous positions and similar duties in Wisconsin, Lewiston, Idaho and on the Salmon River in Idaho.
Jessica brings a wealth of knowledge and information to the presentation, especially in regards to Henry’s Lake.
Working in a fly fishing store, especially, this summer, I got to hear many different and varied types of “grumblings” coming from Henry’s Lake anglers that weren’t satisfied with the size of the fish or the quality or both. Many were concerned that there were/are too many fish in the lake for the biomass to support. Fishing on Henry’s this summer was tough.
This meeting is an excellent opportunity for those of us who fish or have fished Henry’s Lake to get the most up to date information on the lake and its health and future plans that the IDFG may have.
I urge all interested fishermen and fisherwomen to attend this very timely meeting. There is no one right now closer to the workings and plans for Henry’s Lake than IDFG fisheries biologist Jessica Buelow.
Please remember, the meeting is: Thursday November 14 at the Portneuf River Outfitters Fly Fishing Store on North Main St. in Old Town Pocatello.
The meetings begin right at 7:00 PM and are open to all interested persons, regardless of whether you are a TU member or SEIFF member. All meetings are free. I would suggest coming a bit early, as seating at the store is limited to about 50/60 persons. Henry’s Lake always seems to bring many interested folks together to discuss one of Idaho’s, and the world’s, most prolific fisheries.
I hope to see you at the meeting!!!
Sincerely,
Tom Banyas
Program Chair Person, SEIFF

A little tough for me, but thank you for the heads up.

I know it is a long ways. I hope to make it --if I remember!-- If so, I will maybe try to summarize some of what she says on that issue.

I know that the stocking numbers as somewhat less than say 5 or 10 years ago, but I don't think it is a huge difference.

Henrys is prone to getting some winter kill from O2 depletion, and that maybe a factor also on some year classes.

I did a quick look at the stocking reports. I didn't estimate all of them, but a few.

In 2003 they were stocking about 2 million fish. (brooks, cutts, and hybrids together)

In 2010 and 2011 they stocked about 1.5 million fish each year.

This year they have stocked just a little over a million fish. That looks to me like they have reduced the stocking in increments of a half million fish at a time. Going for 2 to 1.5 to 1. Which seems reasonable.

Absolutely. That's encouraging, thanks.

After many emails to IDFG, not a single person gave me correct information on this. Also asked this many times on BFT without any help. Thanks cpierce for helpful information.

I know that some people think that the small size of fish in Henry's recently is overpopulation, but if that is the case, why does it seem like the numbers of fish caught are lower. I am not basing this on studies or gillnetting or anything other than I just keep hearing lots of the same old same old of low numbers of fish being caught are lower and the fish caught are smaller overall.

That is a good point. I can only think that they are schooling elsewhere, but statistic say they are there.
I fished the Cliff area and did okay, I fished the state and cleaned house, went back to cliffs and went farther out and did better.
My catch numbers were way up this year from the past years.
