No

I am not in the contest so I really have no opinion but why shouldnt they. They are a fish

Yes, the more that get caught, the better.

They can still be caught but not entered in the contest. I agree the more taken out the better...but it can still be done without a contest.

Yes , but the contest gives more incentive to target them.

Burbot should be allowed.

If there was anything I learned in the fly comp, it was that the more dedicated you are, the more likely you are to succeed. If you are worried that you won't win the comp because a contestant entered a Burbot, then get up there and get one.

[Wink]I say ban Cutthroats from the berry, who's with me?[Wink]

Yes put them in.

NO...Its great to be fishing for them and removing them from the res. but I think the ice fishing competition is much more fun with more competition. I know several people who won't compete because they feel that the guy who makes it all the way out to catch burbot has a better chance to win. Not everyone can take that drive and since there is really only one water that holds them it put many at a diSadvantage right off and so they choose not to compete.

An another note, if burbot are allowed than maybe we should allow carp in the competition.

First off let me say that I am glad there is a discussion going on about the contest.

Interestingly enough you and duckdog proposed the ending of Burbot are also the two guys who have won in the past with 30 inch cutts from the berry. Burbot gives the average angler the chance to win. Especially those that cannot catch monster fish at the berry and other places like the 2 of you do.

I understand that some don't like burbot but to remove them is a slippery slope. Next we can't have tiger muskies, pike, then macs, then cutts, it just will not end there.

There really is no good reason to stop the catching Burbot for the ice contest. Anyone can catch them if you make the drive. To say "I don't wanna drive that far" is not a good excuse IMO. Sometimes you have to fish the right places in order to win.

Non game fish like carp and suckers is better suited for open water contests, fly contests, etc. Ice fishing for suckers and carp is not something Ice anglers typically target so they just don't fit for the ice comp.

Why not do several specific species slots then a catchall slot? For instance ....1 only of either burbot, pike, carp, sucker, lake trout, T muskie or whatever ones that you want to lump together.

cpierce i like this idea make it a non game fish catagory with one spot in the comp. !!!!

tye dye you know ill catch any non game fish including burbot sucker or carp

anyone can with out much of an effort and i have neve enter a 30 inch cut into the contest but if i have to i guess i can put a 30 inch trash fish in it ( because thats the same as a 30 inch trout) you think a contest should be handy capped for the guys who cant fish why not i guess thats why they do it in golf

like i already said i got elk to hunt until the end of january so i dont know how much fishing ill do but i still have 26 days off next month and im looking for a 30 inch tiger i think i have the big boys on lock we will see

Just ban catching any fish caught from the berry entry to the contest.[Wink]

Tickles and grins, getting a discussion going is good business. I could see the benefit of adding an "outside" category?

Game vs non game.
Taking Burbot out of the contest would be absurd. I've spent many days up there fishing through the ice and the biggest I've ever caught was 29" -- and we have done the Burbot Bash for days on days. Sure, there are bigger Burb's in there, but they aren't as easy as you all think.

Would you consider removing Tiger Muskie then? I promise you that someone will pull one of those through the ice this year, and it will be much bigger than any Burbot.

If you want to win the contest, be willing to do what it takes. For me personally, I'm joining the contest and I DO want to win, but I know that it will take something special (like a Muskie or Mac) to win. I'm still going to have a blast.

Yes! Keep burbot in the ice contest. Flaming Gorge is a ways to drive for almost every contestant so that is no reason to not allow them to be entered in the contest. Waters that have tiger muskie and northern pike are also a long drive for many.
