Across this great country…. and throughout the world… Americans will take time today… to honor our brave fighting men and women…. Who for more than 230 years… have defended our freedom by their duty… honor…and selfless-service.
We recognize that all of our veterans have given something of themselves to this country…… and some have given all- laying down their lives to defend the freedoms we hold so dear, in faraway lands, Normandy, Bastogne, Midway, Chosin Reservoir, Hamburger Hill, Mazar E Sharif, Kandahar, and many other places that shall never be forgotten.
Never in the history of the world has there ever been….. nor will there ever be again a country like this great nation ….. that answers the call for freedom in the middle of the night from any corner of the globe.
Today, as we reflect on the blessings of our liberty… we ask our Heavenly Father..… that we may be faithful stewards of the freedom we have been granted…. Let us never forget… that freedom is not free! It has been bought and paid for many times over with the blood of generations of patriots…. Brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, uncles, cousins. Many of whom left home never to return.
We stagger…. at the eternal debt we owe… to the untold number of American Veterans...who chose to set aside…their personal ambitions and dreams… to assure the well being of our great nation. We, the living….are indeed… the beneficiaries… of those who made tremendous sacrifices to protect and preserve our liberty. May we always be humbly grateful…. to those brave American patriots…who suffered and sacrificed for the glory of God and for the freedom of all Americans.
For those soldiers who have stood guard in peacetime… and to those who have seen the terror, the horror and inhumanity of combat -- and to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice – Let it be said that our soldiers have been there for America and the free world…. Defending not only the Constitution of the United States… but man’s God given unalienable right to freedom. As Thomas Paine reminded patriots everywhere during the trying times of America’s struggle for independence, “The cause of America is in a great measure the cause of all mankind.” The Founders believed that the idea of human liberty and, therefore, the inherent right of self-government, were applicable not only to Americans, but to all people everywhere.
For all veterans, regardless of their service and the era in which they have served, they have paid the price time and time again….. They have defended America and her allies through both the best and worst of times…. and they have performed their duties tirelessly, with little recognition or fanfare.
They have sought neither fortune nor fame. It was merely a simple love of America and the freedoms we all cherish so much.
We know what it is like…. to stand guard… in the chill of the night while others sleep.
We understand the meaning of hardship…. standing watch at freedom's frontier far from our loved ones. It is this devotion to duty that should give us all strength……
Looking out on the world today… we see our Soldiers serving in over 100 countries throughout the world, and the legacy of our veterans continues to inspire our American soldiers today to answer the call to duty.
While we pay our respects to all American Veterans…. I particularly want to thank our citizen soldiers and sailors of today…… our teammates….. They continue to carry the torch of freedom while juggling careers and family….all the while knowing they will most likely be called to deploy to a combat zone at some point. They are volunteers and demonstrate great courage and conviction that we should all admire and support.
To all our veterans…. we have a simple yet heartfelt message -- thank you –
