Well, as you might of heard plenty of times now, the annual whitefish run is on at Bear Lake. I fished it last Saturday and can attest that these whities are plentiful and tasty.

A while back, I suggested that we have a BFT get-together up there and go catch a few. We set the date for this coming Saturday, December 7th.

The weather up there Saturday is going to be downright cold. As such, if you plan to fish up there Saturday, PLEASE prepare for the wrath of mother nature! Also, be extra careful driving through Logan canyon. I predict that the temps in the Peter Sinks area of the canyon will be down in the minus 30-40 range!

Unfortunately, for several reasons, I won’t be attending as I had originally hoped. This is a problem because I promised that the first person to catch a whitefish that morning would get a brand new BFT embroidered baseball cap. Since I won’t be there, I’m not sure how to execute that promise. I think I will just keep it until next year and try again.

For those of you planning on going, here are a few pointers that I might give you:

Cast very light-weight tiny lures. Glittery and shiny work well. See the pictures in this post for some ideas of what to use. Be sure to tip the hook with a 1” piece of worm (no longer). Fan-cast toward the bank and to the north and the south. Reel in very slow … about 5 seconds per revolution with occasional stops and drops. Be prepared for snagups on the bottom!

Lanuch at the First-Point ramp and fish anywhere along the east side between First Point and Cisco Beach where the bottom is very rocky. Anchor your boat in about 8-10 feet of water and if you see a rock covered bottom under your boat, you are probably in a good area.

Attached is a great document written by TubeDude on how to prepare the whitefish for smoking. It is a very well written and descriptive document with helpful pictures.

So, if you can safely make the trip up there, go and have some fun catching these great eats. When you get back, post up a report and tell us how you did. We’d love to read it.

Thanks for the report. I fished it yesterday and today. I managed 1 23" cutthroat yesterday and 2 white fish today, and it was sooo cold! I fished from shore (cisco Beach) for a few hours each day.
