Usually around this time Mud Creek gets ice and Soldier Creek starts icing up on the north end and by the dam.

Any news? Smile Planning a Birthday fishing outing and really would love something closer than Scofield or Huntington.
Or anyone know about Pelican? It usually ices early as well.

I've decided that I ask the difficult questions on this site. Smile

The north end of Soldier Creek next to Highway 40 had ice on it when I drove by on Thanksgiving. I would say the ice extended out only about 50 yards from shore. That was almost a week ago now so I'm sure there is a lot more ice currently. I am curious about Pelican too. It is a good early ice destination.

I was up at strawberry yesterday and fished by the marina. The fishing was great in spite of the big storm burying us in snow. I checked mud creek and there was no visible ice. The wind that accompanied the storm may have very well had something to do with it.

Pelican - Haven't been past but current temps are12 degrees and forecast is for around -20. Now you can make and educated guess. I'll be testing it Friday.

Went to Pelican today, about -15 to begin at 8:30 and didn't get a whole lot warmer by 2:00. First ones on the ice, so it appeared. Ice was clear and 3.5" thick. The water is below all the reeds so there is nothing for fish or anglers to relate to. We drillled quite a few holes in depths ranging from 5.5' to 8' just looking for fish. A few other anglers showed up after us and they drilled a lot of holes too indicating they weren't finding much either. The few fish we caught were very random, no schools, and a very light bite. Water is a little murky. If you go, I hope you can find them better than we did.

What did you catch?

Thanks for the update on Pelican. I think I'll try it next week sometime.

Just a few typical bluegill. I tried for some bass but they didn't want to be found either.

I was unable to make the trek to Pelican. I instead made my way to a closer pond with similar species and did quite well.

UL

I do plan to head that way in a couple weeks.
