Just drove past Mantua, it has about 1/3 of the lake with ice, the south east bay. So it will probably cap tonight. I may have been wrong, you crazy guys that fish 2" ice might be able to this weekend. Let the count down begin. Later J

Drove by Hyrum no ice in sight. Of course it is my first year up hear in the cache valley. When does it usually have about 4 inches of safe ice? Where else do people like to ice fish up in cache valley?

Hard to tell you exactly, but last year Hyrum froze over the night after Mantua. I expect if the cold holds Hyrum will cap in the next week or so, and if everything stays good for ice building, you will have 4" in a week or so after capping. Ice fishing is good at Hyrum, porcupine and Mantua. If you want to try Idaho there are a lot of options. Chesterfield is fishing through the ice now. Good luck J

My guess is 7-10 days of safe ice...if weather patterns continue.
We're getting close fellas.

I agree, it will be here before I'm ready to switch over, but this cold is sure helping me get ready to park the boat... I might already be done and not know it... I wanted to hit Bear Lake Saturday, but if it's windy I'll probably punt...
I have an irrigation pond on my farm and last night froze it thick enough it will almost hold my weight and I'm getting to be a fat boy lately... Well it held me, but was cracking a lot, so I wouldn't dare go out into deeper water on it yet... One more day on it and I'm sure it will hold for the bold and daring crew... Keep warm... J

Start talking ice, figure Lavaman's gonna chime in! heheh
Thing about Mantua is it's smaller, and a bit of a pocket, so cold air settles in early. Hyrum is more open, and bigger, so if there's a brisk wind a good cap can be devastated in short order. But once it caps, it builds good. Well, except for the springs and such, and the inlet of course.
Last year hit Mantua after reports of 3" solid, clear. Well, it was clear, but some of what we drilled was more like 2, and a few bumps and grinds, my boy was read for "exit- stage left".
Stage Left always leads to OFF the ice, or lake of choice, in case you missed that episode!!!!
Just got some fresh auger blades, and new (way too big) sled to try, then I'll be out shopping for 4-wheelers and trailers . . . . one thing leads to another
Not to confuse the issue, but what about Newton? Anyone checked there lately? I'll bet it is capped now, but probably needs a couple nights to get safe... Are there any fish still alive in there? I tried a couple casts there a while back without a bump... Now Yote, that sled may be a problem getting into and out of that hole.... Later J

Hey I don't know if you seen my mention about the web cams at Hyrum, but you can check for ice at hyrum dam cam. A google search should pull that up for ya and it can save a little gas. I guess we should send those guys a little change to help with offsetting their costs because it is sure nice. Later J
