I was able to take a few minutes at lunch today and walk on Utah Lake. I was at Lindon boat harbor, the ice is about 2-3" thick, it was popping while I was walking on it but it held my weight. I would guess it was around 3" of ice. there is a little skiff of snow on the surface.
Sorry no pictures to verify.

Did you drill any holes? How far did you walk out? Thanks for the report.

Quote:he ice is about 2-3"

Really?...It was all open water yesterday with the wind so it only capped over last night. I know its cold but I don't think its cold enough to already have 3 inches.

Has anyone punched holes yet to see?

No I was not able to drill any holes. I did try the tested and proven way of checking ice (throwing big rocks to see if they go through) and none of the rocks did go through but one did make a 2" dent in the ice. I was able to walk around the docks, I didn't venture too far out, was not in the mood to go swimming if by some chance the ice did not hold.

Proven and tested to ruin augers too. [crazy]

I'll go check it out. I'm surprised the whole lake capped with the wind. Usually the harbors go first which is nice because the white bass will swarm in there for a week or so until the main lake caps.

You are a brave soul. I was there last night in Am. Fork harbor with a very small 10x10' piece of ice around one dock, everything else was wide open but you could tell it was going to freeze over night you could almost see a film of thin ice starting to form.

I knew it would be today, still sick tho hopefully tomorrow it will be time to drill it.

I punched a hole off the dock at Lindon. It was about 1.5 inches. This was around 1 pm today.

The real question is how much do you weigh?

I might be headed down there after work tomorrow![fishon]

went to provo boat harbor and drilled a couple holes.... 2 1/2- 2 3/4 inches thick.... im betting tomorrow we can walk on it and do some hard water fishing!!!!

I remember last year when it was 2 1/2" I had my tent up and slaying the fish. Good times on the solid ice that day.

I weigh 210. I wish i did not have a company party tomorrow or i would fish it after work.

Went by AF Harbor yesterday around 5 pm. Completely capped but only about 1" of ice. One guy was there fishing who drilled a hole from one of the docks. Should be safe in a day or 2 or 3. Woohoo!!!

This is good news. I figured the super low temps would have capped it. Thanks for the update.

(That means other valley lakes are likely also capping.)

I hit Lindon this morning for a couple of hours. The ice was just under 3 inches everywhere I punched holes. The lake appears to have capped. With the low water levels, poor white bass spawn, and quick cap of the entire lake, the white bass fest is prolly not going to be huge.

The ice is clear and hard. I'm a huge chicken (a 270 pound chicken) but I walked on the ice. I stayed close to the docks. The deepest part of the harbor was around 6-7 feet deep. Most of it was 3.5-5 feet deep. I managed to catch a couple of fish (no skunk son!) but nothing to brag about. One was a bluegill/green sunfish hybrid (only cool if you are a nerd like me) and the other was a green sunfish.
