Yup last nights 20 below did the trick, Hyrum is 95% capped... Little open water in the inlet end of things... Hopefully a couple days will put enough ice in place that it will hold when things warms up again... Now the ice fishing gets interesting to me, mostly since I can't float a boat any longer... Checked it out on my way to work. On the west side right off the shore it is currently about a half inch clear ice and an inch of cloudy ice.

Thanks for the update guys! Shouldn't be much longer now!

So what do you think caused the cloudy ice? Snow? Is the ice solid even though it is cloudy... Sure hope it will make a good 4 to 6" by the weekend.. I wouldn't mind some ice fishing... Thanks for the thickness details... Later J

I would think the cloudiness is from the snow, I think Hyrum got at least an inch overnight. I'm optimistic that by the weekend we'll have at least another 4 inches. With a forecasted below 0 F tonight and temperatures below freezing at least until Sunday. I don't think the sun will hinder the ice thickening too much during the day, with a skiff of snow on top of the ice (snow reflecting twice as much incoming solar radiation as ice), hoping the insulation of the snow is insignificant at the current amount. It's give an take I guess.

Hadn't thought of the reflectivity of the snow, that might at least even out the insulation of the thin layer of snow... Let's keep hoping for safe ice by the weekend, it would be fun to give it a try before Christmas gets here... Thanks for the info... J

Saw someone with a shelter over by the docks fishing this morning. I drilled a hole twenty feet off the shore by the spillway. About three inches thick (top inch cloudy) Dropped a line in for about 5 minutes before I the ice melodies made me uncomfortable. Had my camera but the batteries were dead, and so were the backups, and the backups to the backups....

And so it begins, no fish today though? Have you found any wax worms? Sportsman's supply didn't come in yesterday and Custom Sports is closed before I get home from work. Does Walmart or Maverik have some?
Thank you for the update, I'll probably join the crowd there Saturday. Good luck and I think my fish finder battery might be in the same shape as yours were. I have been using my boat battery this year and left my little one idle and I think it's died. Guess I better get one on order. Later J

Does Al's sell wax and meal worms?
[signature]
Call a few Walmart stores for wax and meal worms.
They usually have them year round.
[signature]
Yes Al's sells waxies, but I don't know if they have them yet this year. I've only checked a couple spots while I was doing other things. I haven't went looking for them specifically yet. Just hoping to find some so I don't have to chase all over the valley to find them. Later J

The Petsmart should have them year round. That is where I would get mine when I lived up there.
[signature]
Hey thanks for the suggestion, the Petsmart is my fallback since they were fairly expensive there last year and they were small worms last time I got some there, but they do usually have them when no one else does. Thanks for the tip. J

I usually get my wax worms from Ridleys (grocery store in Hyrum) since it's on my way to the reservoir. I just called and they have them.

butter worms?
I've heard (used) waxies, and mealies, spikes even. And mousies - those were pretty cool.
Found some BULK packages on Ebay last year, but with THIS cold a weather, shipping might kill it (literally!).
The BK/Maverick on the way to Mantua has both.
Thanks for the tip, but I have to ask what are butter worms? Thanks J

The
Chilean Moth (
Chilecomadia moorei) is a moth of the Cossidae family. The
Butterworm is the larval form and is commonly used as fishing bait in South America.[1]
Butterworms, like mealworms, are used as food for Insectivore pets, such as geckos and other reptiles, as their scent and bright color help attract the more stubborn eaters. They are also called
tebro worms or
trevo worms, and are high in fat and calcium. Tortoises may even be fed Butterworms due to the high calcium content. It is a good idea to feed a female tortoise Butterworms during egg development for well formed hatchlings. They are difficult to breed in captivity, and most are imported directly from Chile. They are usually irradiated to kill bacteria and prevent pupation as the moth is an invasive species.[1].
