Anyone going to Mantua tomorrow? I will be heading up after work around 3-4 oclock and staying a little after dark maybe. Any recommendations on where to hit the ice?

I look for deeper water towards the middle more. More bite in my experience. Is it froze and how many inches if so? I'm a big boy so I like at least 3-4.

Park along the south dike and follow the trail towards the knoll, then look for areas with lots of previous attention and blood on the ice doesn't hurt. Seen a group about half way across there last night, but I don't know if they were catching or not. If you don't get bit in 15 mins move a little. Sometimes 5 ft will make a world of difference. Good luck. J

Any new reports on ice thickness at Mantua? I need to test out my new auger blades, fish finder, sled, fillet knife...

I haven't been out on there yet or seen recent numbers, but my guess is it should be over 4" now so I'll bet it will be in the fairly safe walking zone now... If your taking a snowmobile or 4 wheeler it might be risky... Hopefully someone that knows will answer your question... Sounds like fun to have that many new toys, have a fun trip... Mantua may not be the best place to try a new finder, since it's sort of shallow, but it should still be fun... Good luck... J

I was second to last one off the ice. I would say you are right about the 4 inches... BUT I also was on a section that might, and I say MIGHT, have had 2.5". I fished it for about thirty minutes until the cracking eventually got the best of me.

I did pretty decent and so did the ones around me, nothing to write home about though.

Just be extremely careful and take your time. Any bets on what the warming temps will do to the ice?

Were you fishing off the South shore, if so how far before you got to the thin ice?

Id say you are safe for 150-200 yards from the south shore... after that its anybodies guess

Thanks for a great report. I'm thinking the warmer temps will slow the freezing rate, but its not going to get much above freezing so likely more hours per day adding ice than subtracting so I'm thinking the fishable stuff now will stay that way. Just my guess. Thanks again. J
