A friend and I fished Starvation today. We started at Indian Bay in an area where we found perch last winter. I fished off the point at the end of the Indian Bay camping loop. We drilled about 25 holes in water between 32 and 60 feet deep and we just couldn't find any perch where we caught them last January.
My friend caught one small rainbow and we decided to move while we still had part of the day left. We saw one other group of three guys who were fishing near where we parked our vehicles. I saw them catch at least one rainbow as we were moving. I think it was SLIMER and his friends.
We went over to the boat ramp below the Camperworld campground and we walked to the area south of the bridge. The ice is 7 inches and very clear and hard. It's kind of scary because the ice is so clear you would think it was only an inch thick. The surface has some frost and a little snow but there are some very slick areas of ice, so cleats are a must!
I caught four nice Starvation Steelhead that were about 17 to 18 inches and fat. They came home with me to be introduced to my Masterbuilt smoker......tasty!
The whole lake appears capped with ice but there are some pressure ridges out on the main lake. There is also a small area of open water directly north of the main State Park boat ramp. I believe the small patch of open water is being kept open by the hundreds of ducks and geese trying to avoid flying south like the rest of their friends.
Remember that the State Park is charging entrance fees during the winter, so pay your fee or buy an annual pass which is a bargain if you use the State Parks very often like we do.
Someone get over there and find the perch and let the rest of us know where they are. I've heard the gill net results by the DWR fisheries guys were not great for perch but I know there are still good numbers of 9 to 13 inch perch somewhere in that lake.
Use caution on the early season ice. Good luck and I expect to hear from the rest of you Starvation regulars.
No pictures this time. Everyone knows what a fat, 18 inch Starvation Steelhead looks like.
OK, one photo.

Great report Mike. Thanks. I plan to do my part in finding some perch.

Thanks for the report. How deep were you finding the rainbows?
[signature]
I caught the rainbows about 18 to 25 feet deep in water that was 56 feet. I was south of the third support from the east end of the bridge.

If you wouldn't mind sharing. What did you catch the rainbows on?

I caught the rainbows (Starvation Steelhead) on a [#0000bf]TubeDude [/#0000bf]custom ice jig tipped with a piece of nightcrawler. I had the jig suspended about 8" below a perch pattern 1/4 oz. Kastmster as an attractor.
The rainbows aren't too picky. If you put anything with a worm in their face, they will eat it. I just watch my Showdown fish finder and I jig the line a little when there is a fish in the "zone" for the presentation.
The trick is to keep one of your lines suspended at about 20 feet if you're fishing water deeper than about 35 feet.
Good luck.......Mike

[#800000]Hello Mike, it's been awhile. Great report. Nice to see you're back out on the ice. I think we need to hook up again on Starvation this winter several times. It was way too much fun last season. And the food weren't to bad either. Sometime after the 15th of January I'll round up the boys on this end and we'll do it.[/#800000]

[#0000FF]Hey, hey, hey. Ya don' gotta always put my name in blue, ya know.
Glad you guys found safe ice and a few tugs. Not looking good for fast perch action this year. There were reports of a big perch dieoff right after iceout last spring. And they were sure hard to find in soft water. The good news is that the survivors are big and healthy. Not the clouds of dinks as in the past two years.
I'm working on some new perch colored flashers with rattle chambers...and a spinner blade. Got you down for a couple to beta test.
Off the subject but did you ever get your new motor squared away?

Mike, looks like we missed each other out there. Although I did see you guys by the bridge on the way home. I fished all the places that you didn't go. Ice was safe for us too. I looked for perch but didn't dare to take quad out to some spots that I know have to produce. Bit the good thing is every trip I learn something new. Ended up with 8 or so rainbows in our group for the day. No perch or walleye. Hit me up next time, we may both be there the same day. That happens a lot with us it seems. Take care

Howdy Pat,
Yes, I finally got my new Mercury outboard installed on the Lund. It wasn't finished until mid-October and by then I was at the Huntsman for my medical treatments. By the time I got home it was November 19 and too late to try the new unit out this fall.
I'm looking at trying Bullfrog in March to break-in the new Mercury Pro XS 150 h.p.. It's a direct injection 2 stroke and it's the high performance model of the Optimax 2 strokes.
You'll have to join me again next summer somewhere when your Tube loses it's air.
[#0000bf]What do you mean that I don't have to put your name in blue?[/#0000bf]

I didn't see anyone else except SLIMER and his two friends. Sorry we didn't run into each other. I'm sure there will be a chance to get together soon. I know there are some perch and walleye in that lake that need to come home for dinner.

Hi Bob,
I'm looking forward to seeing you guys over there in January. Maybe by then one of us will have figured out the yellow-barred demons cruising the depths.

[#0000FF]No need to wait for airlessness. I always enjoy fishing with you...even in your boat. Heck, I fished from a boat several times this past year. My standards have lowered a lot I guess.
Might even be up for splitting expenses on a Powell trip...if you need a ridealong. Been a long time since I waved my wand over those waters.

Sounds like the basis of a plan to me! When we meet on the ice, we will have to make the arrangements for a Powell trip in the spring.

Thanks for the report and pic Mike. Good to read you are getting out and catching some fish, even if they are slimers[
].

Hitch a ride with Mr. Hicks and come over this winter once we find the perch. I hope to see you sometime and I'm sorry I wasn't able to fish with you at Willard this fall when I was in the SLC area for the treatments.

Is that water opening up around the bridge? Or just clear ice? I want to make the drive and search for perch, but with this warmer spell, I am a little concerned about ice conditions out there.

Sorry, this doesn't import well. But the gist of it is this. It made it to 33° for two observations in the last 14 days. Yesterday at 11:00 a.m., and at noon. At 1:00 p.m. it was back to 32°. At 2:00 p.m. it was 28°. It ain't melting.

[#502800]Are you using the little glass rattles from Janns?[/#502800]
[#502800]I need to take another trip to the tackletorium to see what you have been up to.[/#502800]
[#502800]I need to experiment with some of the stuff that I have been making, so if you need a third at Powell, we could spend about a month throwing things at them, that they have never seen before.[/#502800]
