December starts my favorite time of year to fish. I am a sucker for ice fishing. Something about pullin a big fat rainbow through a hole in the ice that just gets my blood goin.
The last few years that I have been paying attention, I have read many reports about the famous starvation steelhead and have wanted to hit the ice there for quite a while now. I have never ice fished starvation and my wife and I had the whole day so we decided to give it a shot.
We parked at the west end of the bridge and fished that side but didnt see any schools come through on the sonar for about an hour so we walked across to the east side of the bridge. My wife caught a small bow and about the same time I had a big one on that got off after a few seconds.
We continued fishing for several hours but did not have another hit nor see any schools on the sonar. We fished til noon with no further action. We talked to many other groups and saw several that were not having any luck either. So we decided to make a move in the direction of home to Strawberry.
We only had a few hours and got to my tradition rainbow sleighing spot at the berry and in those two hours we caught one decent bow, one cut and one that got away (likely a rainbow by the way it was fighting). Several other anglers in the vicinity reported very SLOW fishing all day at the berry.
So there is my report from today.
I have a few starvation questions that I will post in a different post.
