For all of you wondering about Porcupine here's and update. My son and I took our time getting there due to the outside temps and the fact we hadn't but there for a couple of years.
We arrived at about noon and found only one other fisherman on the ice. There was a stiff breeze blowing at the top of the dam, temp was about 30 degrees and the road was icy and slick. We made it fine in my son's Hyundai Santa Fe but I wouldn't recommend trying it without a 4X4.
Getting down to the lake wasn't much of a problem because the face of the dam had about a foot of loose snow on it, which made the going just about right. The edges were frozen solid and we did not need a plank to get on the ice. No problems there.
About 50 yards from the face of the dam we drilled a hole with our hand auger and found the ice to be about a foot thick. The other gentleman fishing came with his power auger and drilled us three others holes so we could get started. He had been there a couple of hours and said he had caught two browns and that was it.
I put our fish finder down the first hole and got it setup while we got our poles ready. Before we were ready the fish finder started going nuts with fish coming through. They were between about 7 and 15 feet deep. Because of us being slow getting setup and not knowing what we were doing most of the fish had gone through. My son managed to hook one but lost it before he got it iced.
We stayed about three hours and in that time a few fish would come through but not like the first group. We didn't get anymore hookups so we called it a day.
Anyhow, now you know the conditions and if you want to give it a try good luck to you!
