One of my three computers recently died and I was hoping to resurrect a computer that I haven't used for a couple years. When I quit using the prior computer it was working fine with no issues. The problem is that it has Windows 2000 installed on it and I see that Windows 2000 hasn't been supported since 2010. What are my options in getting a newer version of Windows installed and after installing a new version will I still have access to the Word and Excel that is installed on the computer or will I lose them with the windows upgrade?

Once you upgrading the software too window 7 or 8 you need too buy the cd too be able too work on word and exel. Cost around $60-70 that's my guess how much they cost but after that cd is good for the rest of your life even if there's a window 9 version coming out in maybe 6-10 year you can use that same cd.

Hope this helps out.

It depends on how old the computer is. You have to check two things:

1)Does the computer meet the minimum system requirements for the OS that you want to upgrade to? Example: windows 7 requires a 1ghz processer, and 1gb of ram for 32 bit, and 2 gb ram for 64 bit. You're computer may be too old for windows 7.

2) You'll also have to check the system requirements for the version of microsoft office you have. You'll have to reinstall the programs after installing the new OS, and if you have an old version of office, you may not be able to install it on a newer system (I'm not 100% sure on that).

I'm guessing you're computer will probably be too old to install anything but windows 2003. According to wikipedia support will terminate for 2003 on July, 2015

Best bet if you don't want to buy hardware upgrades is to get a copy of Windows XP.

Windows XP support will end april this year..For what it's worth, I believe you can still run those systems, there just won't be any security updates from Microsoft. If you're not going to connect to the internet, and just using it for excel, then the microsoft support is a non-issue.

Thanks for all of the advice. Today I purchased a used computer already loaded with Windows 7 Pro 64bit and Office 2010. Now I need to figure out how to clean this laptop before throwing it in the trash. Any advice on how to do that would be appreciated.

Decent setup, I was looking at some reconditioned puters on the Walmart web site that go for around $140-$190 but that is without a monitor. Did you buy it from a local guy?

Yes, found it through the Online KSl classifieds and drove about a mile to the guys house.

Was the guy just selling that one puter?
