I am planning a steelhead trip down this section of the river for some time in late February to early March. I have never been down there and lacking any specific information I'll end up doing what I usually do which is work my way downstream and explore as I go but with only 2 days to fish I would appreciate any information that would increase my chances for success. Steelhead fishing is not new to me but the I have never fished the Upper Salmon river. My current residence makes the salmon my closest steelhead river so I want to give it a shot.

General information about the area would also be appreciated, day and night time temps and the availability of free camping and how much company I should expect on the river this time of year.

Regardless of how much information I recieve I will make the trip do some exploring and enjoy myself.

Good time to be down there. It can get pretty old at night so prepare for cold weather. That time of year anywhere below Shoup is usually pretty good. The narrows get a lot of attention and turn into a small city down there when deadwater blows out. Usually the 1st or second week of March. There are plenty of free places to camp. The good spots fill up quick so if you are planning on using a tent you may be setting up on the side of the road.
