First of all I want to say that this is not an original idea. I saw it on a tenkara forum (google vagabox). I was wondering if there is interest on this forum for a traveling fly box? It would work something like this...

1. I would load a fly box with 10 patterns and a small journal to document the adventures of the Idaho traveling fly box.

2. You get the fly box for a two-three week window. You add a few flies of your own, fish with the flies in the box and document in the journal your adventures and what happened with different kinds of flies.

3. I a fly wears out you just keep it in the box so everyone can see the flies that have lived and died in the box.

4. If you lose a fly or it breaks you replace it with your own either hand tied or buy from store.

5. You exchange addresses by PM and it is your responsibility to send the box to the next user after you have fished with it and/or your time has run out.

6. I think we should stick with registered BFT members and regular posters should get priority for the box. I also think we should stick with Idaho or Idaho/Utah members just to keep it local with people we have seen post or contribute.

These are just some ideas...What do you think? Who wants to participate?

I would jump in. Hopefully I would pass the interview....
Maybe the only thing I would suggest, and maybe already a given, would be......a little of everything for flies to start. A pattern that would catch a carp, bass, trout, etc. Maybe something big and goofy too and see if anyone has luck with it.
Not sure if it would get 4-8 days use or just 1-3 if my turn, and maybe quite similar like that for many others here, but I not sure that matters.

Yes the box would start with a very diverse supply of flies. You can fish as much or as little as you want during your alotted time. The only rule is that when your time is up the box must be shipped to the next person so that they can have time to use it.

This sounds really cool! I think it would be cool to do it from state to state as well. What would determine the order of where the fly box goes? If possible I would be down to do this.

I'm out fishing for a couple days I will post the details when I get home. Looks like there is enough interest to go ahead with the plan.

I would be down to join in on this adventure. About 3 years ago at the fly fishing expo at the salt palace there was a gentleman that came around and was soliciting fly donations from some of the tiers to make a box just like this that they were sending overseas. It was the same concept in that one angler received the box, took photos of all the flies in the box, fished with them for 3 weeks and if he lost any then he had to tie a new fly to match the one lost or as close to matching as possible. They would then send this box to a new angler in a different country. This would occur for 6-8 anglers and after the last angler's time was up then they donated the flies to their local fishing museum for display. They had a blog spot that you could log onto to look at the pictures of the fish caught and stories of the catch. I donated flies for two different boxes and thought it was a great way to get your work out there if you are a lesser know tier such as myself.
