After years of debating it, I finally made it to Clark Canyon! Loved it! I left Friday night after school with my son and his good friend. Our intentions were to rendezvous with Windriver and sure enough we got tied in with him already set up with dusk setting in. Had to set up everything in a bad wind, but once we got things straightened out we were having our first bites soon after. Soon both my son and his friend hooked up with their first burbots. It makes me happy to see teens who are excited about fish; both were pumped that they had a new species on there list. It took me a little while, but finally I hooked into one. In the end we had iced 13 fishing all night till 10:30 AM. our largest was 23'', we missed double the bites and lost about five after hook-up. We only slept for three hours, however, my son stayed up till 3:30 trying to get one more, which he did.

I know Windriver and his two boys also did well, and they had a couple of real nice ones. It was great to fish with him and I appreciate every bit of knowledge that he shared. He is truly one of the most knowledgeable fishermen on this board! It is also a rarity to find someone who is crazy enough to spend the night on the ice. Camping on the ice is a great experience, and you should give it a shot! I know he fished Saturday as well and I hope he reports on how he did.

As far as strategy goes we fished in 30 FOW, used white/green glow tube and grub jigs tipped with sucker meat. I seemed to get hits equally on both jigging and dead sticking it. The bite went on and off all night, but staying with it produced success.

I want to thank all who have posted about Clark--you all helped me get up there.

Best,

It was great fishing with you Ovidcreek. We had a great time. I'll make a full report when I can get to a computer. I hate writing on my phone.

I finally made it back to my computer. It was a great extended weekend. I got to Clark Canyon a couple hours before Ovid Creek but the wind made set up difficult so I only fished for an hour or so before Ovid Creek and company got there. The fishing was hot when we first started but as is the case with all fish it takes a while to get them tuned in. We were missing a lot of fish because we weren't setting the hook hard enough. So in the first couple of hours we landed four ling but had about a dozen on! However, as the evening went on we got them dialed in and ended up catching a dozen. We caught six more in the morning hours before we decided to take a break and go Dillon for lunch. We should have just packed it up and quit while we were ahead because when we got back there was one hot hour between 4 and 5 where we landed six. Then nothing until we packed up and went home at ten PM.

Overall it was a great time camping and talking with Ovidcreek. We kept three Ling that went 26,26,and 25 inches.

For those unfamiliar with Ling fishing it is fun but not easy. Clark Canyon had me feeling very wind burnt by the time we went home. We fished glow jigs tipped with sucker with a squirt of crawfish sent in 35 feet of water one inch off the bottom. Sometimes they wanted the bottom pounded and sometimes they wanted dead stick.

I can't explain why I love these strange ugly fish, but I think it is just the fact that they are caught at night. There is something magical about wandering around in the snow and wind chasing rods with a headlamp. It is extreme hard core fishing no doubt.

Thanks again Ovidcreek for fishing with us. Will have to do it again some time.
