[cool]This past Friday and Saturday I had the priveledge of fishing Pyramid Lake, NV (30 miles north of Reno). My plane got into Reno at about 7:30 and my dad and I were off to the lake. Unfortunately his buddy wasn't able to take us out in his boat because he spent 5 hours in the hospital the day before and had some health issues[
] which sucked because my dad's u-joint in his boat motor is broken, so we were stuck to fish from shore.
So, we headed over to a spot on the West side of the lake called "Blockhouse." and fished from there. On Friday, I only caught one Cutthroat at 19" but didn't get a pic of that one, and dad caught 2 just under that size. At Pyramid the size limits are 2 fish total between 15" to 19" are keepers, and anything over 24" also is a keeper, so dad had two fish to take home.
Saturday went a little better with dad and I catching about 5 fish each, but I caught the biggest. Ha Ha!!! He was 21 1/2" and weighed about 3 pounds. That's the picture attached below. One guy fishing right down the beach from us caught a nice 25 incher which weighed in at exactly 5 pounds even, but I didn't get a picture of that one.
All in all it was a fun time, and MUCH better than being at work. We caught the fish on spoons made by Blue Fox called "Tor-P-Do," but unfortunately they don't make them any longer. We would have caught way more fish than this if we were on the boat, but it was a good day anyway!!!

Boy it kind of sucks how when you have to shrink your picture down before you can upload it, and then when you post your message the picture looks a little blurry because of the shrinking.[mad]

Your right, Polokid. There's a few different species of fish in there. The Lahontan Cutthroat Trout is the main species that the lake is famous for including the world record of 41 pounds caught in 1925, but there is some undocumented accounts of an Indian catching a 62 pounder before that. The other species are Sacramento Perch (but I've never caught one, and neither has my stepdad, and he's been fishing there for about 25 years. They are rare, and very hard to catch there. I've heard that the best time to catch them is in the summer or fall. The other fish that's in Pyramid is called a Cui-Ui (pronounced "kee-wee") and it's an endangered fish and illegal to keep if caught unless you are a Piaute Native American. Pyramid Lake is on the Piaute(sp?)Indian Reservation, and you have to pay $7 per day to fish there, but you don't need a state fishing license or non-resident fishing license. Oh yeah, one more fish species, that good old Chub, which makes up the lunker cut's diet just like at Strawberry. It's a huge lake. About 35 miles long, 11 miles wide, and about 300 feet deep in the middle.[pirate]

[cool] That sure is a pretty colored fish. Nice job!! I'm going to try to get there around April 1st next year.

Right on, Don! April is the last month that the fishing is good at Pyramid. As the temperature gets warmer, the fish go deeper, and they get less active too. It's actually closed to fishing in the summer til October 1st or so. The fishing is best from October til April. I think the biggest caught this year so far is 14 lbs, with several 10 and 12 pounders, and everything under that being caught so far. It's an AWESOME lake, but if you are taking a boat, MAKE DAMN SURE YOU WATCH THE WIND as it comes up quickly sometimes, and makes like 5 to 6 ft swells. Some people nichkname that lake the widowmaker (no sh#$), so please watch the wind especially toward the north end of the Lake is usually where it comes in from.

Thanks Out4Trout. I know a fella who has flyfished it for a number of years, so that's what we're going to try. I hear that some of the regulars actually carry step ladders out as far as they can wade, then climb up to cast and, I assume, sight cast to cruising fish. Ever heard of that? Truth or fiction? Sounds strange, but I've done crazier things to try to catch fish!

what the heck did that have o do with sacramento perch hehe. couldnt see anythign on there about them.

that is very true and a tradition out there. kind of if your not on a ladder your not fishing. i have never been there but talked to a few people and that was the general story they left me with. seen alot of pictures of people with this technique. pretty interesting.

Truth, Don. Your friend is probably going to take you fly fishing at a place called "the nets" and you probably will be wading out as far as possible and getting on a stepladder. You'll also probably be using black with a little red in it wooley worms, or wooly bugs. Good luck out there!
