A buddy and I are getting a hankerin' to get out and try our luck on Sturgeon, but niether of us have much experiance with em, we bought all of the necssary gear last year and done ok
down below Salmon falls dam by Hagerman.
So we plan on heading back down there to give it another try, Just not sure if this is the right time of year for it, is this a good time to go?
Also I have some frozen Salmon bellies I vac sealed and brought back from AK. last June, think they would work?
If not, any suggestions on what to use for bait?
Many thanks for any advice offered..[fishin]

What did you do okay on?

Great time to go, females are fat for spawn. Bigger fish downstream. Salmon belts should work, I like morts, roll mop, squid and herring. You have any time available weekdays? Got a service call in Hagerman tomorrow.

I'm itching to go as well. I live in Pocatello, so the sturgeon up by me are unfishable until Memorial Day weekend when the bait season opens back up on the Snake up here. I have a fair amount of experience, but my boat has a prop not a jet - so that seriously limits my abilities down in your neck of the woods! I've always done great with herring or squid. The stinkier the better - if you haven't got any bites in an hour or so, switch baits. The fresh stuff catches fish a lot better! Also rather than threading the herring through the hook - tie it on the back of the hook with magic thread and leave a good amount of the curve of the hook exposed, this will dramatically increase your hook up percentage!

I'd like to try at cj strike, I found a hole 110 ft deep. Not enough flow to go to my favorite spots, need 1000 cfs coming out of Milner. Prop boat is fine below Perrine bridge or thousand springs.

Caught a 7 footer om Monday using kokanee bellies. Fishing in the river is ok, the lake (CJ) needs to warm up a bit before the fish get more active. You should do fine in the river near Hagerman...

When I lived in Hagerman, we would canoe out to the point below the dam. You can drive around and walk out also. It's got so popular the fish are harder to catch. Caught a 8.5 at the malad boat ramp one year in May. The cabin, Thompson, jet and porter field holes should be good right now, the fish there are from cj. Pm for directions.

Many thanks to everybody for their replies, tips, and bait suggestions.
Last year when we were down there, some fella was using some pretty big strips of Carp meat and he was really hooking up, I had planned on getting out last summer to stick a few Carp with my bow and save the meat, but just never got around to it.
Oh well, sounds like there's plenty of other options.
I will be sure to report back here after we go try our luck, thanks again to everybody.
dtayboyz,, I can pretty much take any time I want off, ya got someting in mind? [

I been itching to get out. We're going down below the dam tomorrow. I put the tags on the jet boat this morning, hoping the water comes up a little.

went out today at a favorite hole near twin fished for 2.5hr caught 2 fish. was fun but the water is still cold and the fish don't fight near as hard or jump when its cold like this but hey i was in shot sleeve shirt in february and there was no ice on the rocks so not to shabby i guess

Good for you that is great. How long did it take you to bring it in? Ron

Thanks Ron, I'd guess it took about 10 minutes or so.
I was pretty exciting when my pole started that steady bend, there was no mistaken what was going on, I let it go for a few seconds then set the hook, Bingo!! fish on!
Good fun fer sure.
