Bear Lake Fishing Report:
Bear Lake is now totally open water and boats can be launched at the Utah State Park Marina. You may or may not be able to launch on the east side boat ramps at 1st Point and Rainbow Cove, but there are no courtesy docks in the water at either location and there could be ice stacked along the shore depending on wind direction. The fishing has been excellent for cutthroat trout both by trolling and jigging. Just about any lure has been working for trolling and the jiggers are using ¾-1oz. tube jigs tipped with cisco or sucker meat. The best luck has been off the “rockpile” area, but 1st and 2nd Point areas have traditionally been good at this time of the year too. I'm not going to lie to you, if you want to catch a lot of fish and some good sized fish, now is a great time. In another few weeks the fishing will likely slow down. Get your boats out and get up here! You can also target whitefish off the rockpile and off the weedbeds south of Gus Rich Point down to the rest area in about 25-40’ of water. There are weedbeds along the east side off the pumphouse and between 1st and 2nd Points in the same depths. Use smaller Swedish Pimples or Kastmasters tipped with meal worms right on the bottom. Remember, in order to keep a cutthroat trout from Bear Lake it must have a healed fin clip (usually the adipose fin). Cutthroat trout with all fins intact have to be released, including fish that are tagged with all of their fins. Consider releasing large lake trout in order to maintain the fishery. Lake trout can easily live to over 35 years old in Bear Lake.

Wow that's great news! I've never been up there my boat is ready to go, was thinking of going to the Gorge but I heard it's all locked in. Anyone willing to go to Bear Lake this Saturday? I have all the tackle we need on my boat pm me if you would like to give it a try. Should be affordable with 3 of us. Don't know how far exactly it is but I'm guessing its a bit closer that the gorge.

Bear Lake is 2.5 hrs from the middle of SLC. Its about 6's if you go through Evanston or through Logan. Personally, I like the Logan route a lot better.

Hey Scott,
Thanks for the update. I am ready for spring and getting my remodeling done so I can start enjoying it up there.[frown]
I too prefer going thru Logan, those semi trucks cranking along at 80 plus scare the He!!! out of me.

Do you fish both states or do you typically just stay on the Utah side? Where can I get a Idaho license up there? Sorry for asking so many questions just want to be prepared.

That is great news. How far is the launch ramp from Logan? We'd be coming from Provo. Places to stay? Logan or Montpelier? Thanks for any advice you can provide. Maybe bring a disabled vet or two.

you will be fishing in Utah, but either license can be used on the whole lake. It is NOT like the Gorge. I would join you, I know the lake pretty well, but cant go until Sunday...

There's a number of hotels, motels, and no-tells in Logan, some right along the roadway as you travel up from Brigham. Some right by 10th west along the highway, just a titch before town. Google can help you, or Expedia is you're so inclined.
Travel time from Logan - about 40 miles, but probably just inside an hour travel time depending on road conditions. It's a long and winding road that leads to Bear Lake. (hum it - go ahead). Garden city anyway.
From there - depends on what launch/direction you head.
Here's a map of Bear Lake - topo too.
