Have never seen 'em this early. Yesterday's deluge brought out a horde of crawlers last night. Usually they emerge after that first warm rain in April. Too early to stash & cache in the garage fridge, but looks like a fat & juicy crop this year.

Our worms would have to be packing a jackhammer and TNT out here. It snowed 4 inches and froze hard last night. But today the wind is blowing 40 mph to make up for it so all is good. We sure can use the moisture!!![Smile]

[#000000][font "Times New Roman"][size 3]Here is a good bait worm idea if any fellows out here keep or raise rabbits as pets or for food: Rabbit droppings are an excellent environment for night crawlers/worms. You hust have to fill up some kind of container with rabbit droppings (they are round, hard, and black or brownish), and you do not even need to add any dirt or other material. This way you will have yourself a nice supply of worms.[Image: bobwink.gif][smile]

I think there's something about actually dipping your hands into a box of actual rabbit shit that might turn people off from your idea. I think I'll just stick with wet, shredded newspaper and dirt.

Perchinski, you should totally try the turd thing though. Take pictures.

But Dave, whatever is used for "bedding" is soon about half worm poop, anyway. Is there one kind of poop that worse than another?

Well, I understand, but this is no joke. Many folks who keep rabbits for food place a container under the cages and raise worms. And you know, you won't necessarily need to dip your hands into the rabbit manure. Since rabbits usually pick a spot to "do their dirty business" their droppings are mainly in only one part of the container. After a little bit of time, (and since rabbits are strictly herbivores, their droppings really contain grasses, hey components and that kind of material) the droppings look just like dirt and don't smell, in fact you can't even tell the difference between the two.

When you start your container, you can put some dirt or newspaper shredding it won't hurt at all. And another thing, the rabbit manure doesn't contain so much ammonia, otherwise the worms would die in it. This actually shows how "clean" the droppings are if you think about it. Earthworms are actually very sensitive creatures. They don't handle toxicity and too much ammonia/nitrates etc very well. You get a double benefit, rabbit meat and bait worms. You can easy get 80-90 lbs. of good rabbit meat per year from a single doe, and hundreds of nice and fat earthworms! [cool][fishon]
