The coming storm may change conditions soon but Pikeman99 and I had a good trip this week at Fish Lake.
We arrived on Tuesday and were greeted by fantastic weather that made it hard to believe we were actually ice fishing. We caught all of the lake's game fish, except Tiger Muskie, during the next two and a half days.
On Tuesday we fished deeper (60-65 feet) and I got two pup macs on a tube jig tipped with chub meat. The larger one was 22.5 inches and about 4 pounds.
Pikeman99 got a bunch of mac pups, some splake and many rainbows. The trout were ready to play most of the time. The rainbows were suspended at about 18 to 22 feet in the deep water.
On Wednesday a friend of mine from Price joined us. We used Pikeman's ATVs to travel across the lake to the northeast section of the lake. We fished in water between 20 and 30 feet deep. The perch, splake and rainbows gave us pretty steady action on Wednesday.
The ice conditions mid week were very good. The slush from previous snowfalls had consolidated and refrozen. The walking and riding was very easy and the crusty surface was not slick. I would imagine the snow on Thursday and the next storm will change everything, so a current conditions report will be important for anyone planning a trip. The ice and frozen slush was about 18 inches thick in the places we fished.
We had steady action most of the time. My friend and I wanted some perch so we concentrated on the pesky yellow barred demons for a good part of Wednesday afternoon. The larger perch we caught were about 8 inches and they will yield some small but tasty fillets. I like to use the smaller fillets for coconut perch, a treat that no one passes up. I did keep the larger mac pup because it sustained some gill injury when I hooked it. We released most of the splake and all of the rainbows.
We fished on Thursday morning and caught a few more splake fishing in deeper water again. The strong winds picked up and it started snowing. We threw in the towel around 1100 when we could no longer see the shore due to the heavy snow. The roads were getting a little slimey as my friend DJ and I headed down to Loa for a burger.
It was a very enjoyable outing with good friends. I appreciate Glen hauling his wheelers all the way from Heber so we didn't have to walk so far. Thanks to the Man!
Did I mention the weather was great on Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday.....not so much!
Pikeman99 on Wednesday morning. Sunscreen time for sure.
