It was the same ice fishing, last years spawn musta been fantastic. Only way we could catch bass was cranking, them damn perch were destroying the plastics before the bass could get the bait. Caught a few three lbrs but never had 15 lb bag. There have to be some real toads somewhere filling up on perch. All the bass we caught have big bellies on em. Kinda interested to hear what the treasure valley guys weights this afternoon. Bell rapids has been producing lmb, but it's closed to harvest til July.

I think the scads of dinky perch at Strike are from year before last's spawn. A 6" perch is 2-3 years old. That was the year with the long, rainy spring with cold, muddy water and back-to-back cold fronts for weeks on end. I'm sure the bass, bluegill and crappie spawn for 2012 was minimal at best, since I was still catching females stuffed with eggs in late June. Perch spawn earlier and at lower temperature, so they had less competition. A lot of them survived and now we are seeing the effects.
The larger gamefish are having a smorgasbord though. I've caught lots of trout and smallmouth with baby perch in their stomachs. I just hope the large number of small perch doesn't depress the upcoming year classes of bass and crappie.

A friend of mine fished Bell a couple weeks ago and they got several LMB in the 3 to 4 pound range. Ron

Four of us went to cj cottonwood on saturday. There were at least 15 people there fishing. Some fishing the cove, and some fishing off the docks for perch and trout. Didn't see a fish caught. A guy pulled in with a boat and he had caught one small bass.
cj needs another week or two of warm weather..

Bruneau is still to cold, the fish are in the main pool. 22 lbs with 7 fish won it on Saturday. 15 to 20 ft is the magic, you have to go 100 ft out at cottonwood. Pm for waypoints. Something is eating those perch.
