[#800000]There are only 30 fish listed as native in Utah. Of these 30 fish, only about 7 are considered game fish; 3 cutthroat trout species, 3 whitefish species, and the Bonneville Cisco. Every other game fish species has been transplanted here by either the DWR or some bucket biologist.[/#800000]
[#800000] [/#800000]
[#800000]Now stop and think about that for just a minute. Since the early pioneers first came here to Utah, the fish of choice was a cutthroat trout or a whitefish. And when the early Mormon settlers established roots here, they decimated the June sucker population in Utah Lake by collecting it for food. So is it any wonder that Utah is a trout based society? Really – you don’t see or understand that?[/#800000]
[#800000] [/#800000]
[#800000]And of that 30 native fish listed, 23 of them are on Utah Sensitive Species List. This list includes all of the trout, 2 of the whitefish, and the Cisco. All aquatic management decisions MUST consider and mange for the protection of ALL of our native species above all others.[/#800000]
[#800000] [/#800000]
[#800000]Now, tie that to the fact that most (but not all) fishable bodies of water in Utah are man-made and contain one or more of our native fish and fisheries managers have to consider the well being of these native fish and then maybe, just maybe, you’ll start to grasp just how huge an undertaking that job is. The fact that we even have walleye in Utah is a very large plus in my mind. Now, bass, perch, bluegills, crappie, pike, browns, brookies, grayling, catfish, etc, etc, etc; NONE are native and yet a few on here P&M because they aren’t in every body of water and managed above all else. Why don’t you try being thankful for what you do have and try working WITH the DWR to improve on that. Your sour grapes attitude isn’t accomplishing very much at all.[/#800000]
