I would think so, I have never fished porcupine. It should be good for some nice browns and kokanees. You also have Hyrum Res, Newton, and not too far from Mantua. If I lived up there, I would just take the hour drive and head to Bear Lake, but it rarely has ice on it.

hashbaz,
Like most places, Porcupine has good days and bad days, good years and bad years. But I would think it is always worth a try. I haven't lived in Logan for a long time but I caught plenty of fish from Porcupine, although not in the winter. It does have Kokanee and some BIG browns and decent cutts. A fish finder would be a big help to locate fish. Personally I think Porcupine is under-rated and therefore not fished by too many people. But that's okay too. Help prevent the crowds.
Try standard trout ice sfishing techniques. I'll bet you catch some. The time I did try to fish it through the ice I was a real novice at ice fishing. And I had no fish finder and no auger either. You don't bother to move around much to find fish when you have to chop a hole in 10+ inches of ice with a hatchet. So I don't count that trip against the lake. I know that people catch fish through the ice at Porcupine so I'm sure you will too.

Polokid is right. There are lots of great places to fish up in Cache Valley. Despite being a novice at ice fishing back when I lived there, I did well at Hyrum through the ice. I bet it is even better now. You can also fish the Logan River in winter. You'd be surprised what you can catch up there with tiny black midges. Benson marina can produce decent crappy fishing too. And Mantua can be good. None of those places is too far away, evne Willard(maybe not a good choice this year). Good luck.

I fished there nearly twenty times through the ice last year. It was the best place that I found to fish in the area. I tried the other places, but never had the success that I had at Porcupine. I never actually fished for the Kokanee, but I saw many people try and it was more hit and miss than fishing for the trout. It was rarely too crowded. The only time that there were a lot of people there was the week after Doug Miller ran a show on the porcupine Kokanee, but after all of the followers got up there and didn't catch any fish they didn't go back and the bad word got out. Send me a private message if you want to know some more info.

I made one attempt to hit Porcupine last year, unfortuantely it was when we had the Jan thaw, and the ice was not safe. I'll try again this year. Like others have said, Hyrum, or Mantua might be a very good option for you as well.

I went there twice last year through the ice. The first time we caught nothing for about three hours and then got into the kokanees at about 10 feet under the ice in 50 feet of water. Two of us both limited and released fish. Followed up a couple of weeks later (after Doug Miller did his thing). This time we drilled over 30 holes and spent most of the day with the fish finder trying to find the kokanees again. Only located them once at 75 feet in 90 feet of water. We missed numerous bites over a 5 to 10 minute period because the monofilament line had too much stretch for a hook set. That was it, we ended the day skunked. I haven't been back since.

[red]I'm up in that neck of the woods. I love Porcupine but it was an off year this past summer. We struggled to not get skunked. Most folks go by the dam or the spring but I kind of like the area where it widens out from steep cliffs to the main body of the res. to drill holes. [/red]
[#ff0000]The perch fishing was pretty much nonexistent through the ice and last summer at Hyrum but the trout fishing was good to fair. [/#ff0000]
[#ff0000]There are some awesome browns in Logan canyon early spring. Welcome and Enjoy![/#ff0000]

Welcome to the site. I icefished Porcupine once last year. We got a few fish out of it. I like to fish as close to home as possible, more time on the ice.I have fished Hyrum a few times and had good luck getting trout through the ice.Looking forward to some posts.

I have always wanted to hit up Porcupine but it is a long drive from Salt Lake. Do well up there on perch fishing tackle. Fish finder and is a must. The area near the dam for kokes.
