Just thought you might wanna think about this for a minute [Smile]

a. The number of physicians in the US is over 700,000.

b. The number of accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year exceed 120,000.

c. Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171. (US Dept. of Health & Human Services).

Then think about this:

a. The number of gun owners in the US is over 80,000,000.

b. The number of accidental gun deaths per year is 1,500.

c. The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is .0000188.

Statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.

FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR.

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors before this gets out of hand. As a public health measure I have withheld the statistics on lawyers for fear that the shock could cause people to seek medical attention. [laugh]

That is some great stats Jbhp, I think I'll print it and show it to a few people at work, thanks. WH2

Good point! Maybe you should forward this on to the folks at PETA and anyone else who thinks that we should ban guns for the general public! [crazy]

i believe this is Tongue-in-cheek, a joke if you will, because your statistics have no bearing on each other, the argument is a fallacy . . .

but if you are serious, please add these stats to the pile: [li][font "Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"]According to the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) in 2002, 353,880 victims of serious violent crimes (rape and sexual assault, robbery, and aggravated assault) stated that they faced an offender with a firearm. [/font] [li][font "Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"]Victimizations involving a firearm represented 7% of the 5.3 million violent crimes of rape and sexual assault, robbery, and aggravated and simple assault. [/font] [li][font "Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"]The FBI's Crime in the United States estimated that 63% of the 15,980 murders in 2001 were committed with firearms.[/font]

Hi Southern,

I think the stats diamond is using was based on accidental deaths rather than intentional crimes committed using a firearm. Just a thought, I could be wrong...
[signature]
I think what Jbhp was pointing out with those stats is that people that own guns don't have accident very often because they are safe with their guys. No one can control what the bad guys will do, not even the cops. Remember, guns don't kill people, people kill people. WH2

[signature]
That's right, however that stats we really need are how many of those murders and violent crimes were committed by people that STOLE the firearm or obtained it through illegal methods, as opposed to those committed by people who were legal gun owners turned bad and used their weapon for evil purposes.
[signature]
Good point, Cat Man! I totally agree. NRA member and proud of it. It's important to teach gun safety etc. to our children, and then keep 'em in a safe place. People kill people, not guns!
[signature]
Amen my friend! Everyone that supports the right to hunt, fish and own a gun should check out this awesome web-site... [url "http://www.outdoorsunlimited.net/"]http://www.outdoorsunlimited.net/[/url]

It has news articles and even a list of anti-gun celebrities and companies.

You should also know that violent crimes involving guns went up %38 in Great Britain in just 2 years after they outlawed and confiscated the majority of the guns. The problem is not solved by gun control. The real truth is with the worlds open borders and the number of guns there is no way to keep the "bad guys" from getting guns. The only real way to detour the violent criminal is to have them second guessing as to whether or not the victim will have a gun or not.

In my younger years I was around a number of criminals and all of them had the same fear when committing a crime. It wasn't getting caught by the cops it was that someone would pull a gun on them.

Say what you want but I beleive the more intelligent upright citizens that hold guns the better.
[signature]
im def not one who wants to outlaw firearms . . . just commenting on the salacious use of stats that mean nothing . .

my brother lived in the town in georgia for 6 months or so where its a requirement to live there that you must own a gun and know how to use it . . . not too much violent crime there, let me tell ya

Well I think if you're going to kill someone you're probably very determined to do it so you take away the guns they will move to a knife then if somehow knives were outlawed they will move to a fork or some other creative thing, there are exceptions to that but for the most part I think they're determind.

Here is another good one.

Results of the first year after gun confiscation in Australia

Orange County Register
Letters to the Editor Section 8/4/99:

It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced to
surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed, a program costing
the government more than $500 million dollars.

And now the results are in: Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2
percent; Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent; Australia-wide,
armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent).

In the state of Victoria, homicides with firearms are up 300 percent.
Figures over the previous 25 years showing a steady decrease in armed
robbery with firearms changed drastically in the past 12 months. There
has been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly.

Australian politicians are on the spot and at a loss to explain how no
improvement in "safety" has been observed after such monumental effort
and expense was successfully expended in "ridding society of guns."

Bet you won't see this data on the evening news or hear your governor
or members of the state Assembly disseminating this information. It's
time to state it plainly: Guns in the hands of honest citizens save
lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws only affect the law-abiding
citizens.

Hey southernman I figured thats what you meant, you really have to be careful of statistics. They can be quite deceiving and it's easily to manipulate the facts to make things look one way or the other.

A couple of years ago I took a statistics class and my teacher always warned us of this. He used to always say,

"There are lies, then there are damn lies, and then there are statistics."

I think he was quoting someone else who said it but I'm not sure.
[signature]
[size 2]I wouldn't write stats off completley. When there down independently. If there done by the goverment, maybe.[crazy][/size]
[signature]
No, definitely don't write stats off, just be careful of what you hear without investigating further.
[signature]
[Smile]Howdy Harold,

You are absolutely right on with those Australian facts. "An armed society is a polite society" & "If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have them." Pretty rough lesson (500 million) for those poor buggers in the Australian government. They spent money to increase crime.... Thanks for sharing.

And as for statistics, they might be slanted a little, but not as slanted and politically motivated as the evening news.
[signature]
Thats a lot of money to spend to make crime easier:}

My Dad, who works on Base is the one who sent me these Stats. I took them to mean both serious and the last part a joke. I'm all for guns and agree with all that's been said about people kill people and only the innocent suffer in 'gun control'. It's very Sad facts but, unfortunatly, very true. [unsure]

I on the other hand, have serveral doctors that I have to see and will have to see the rest of my life. I have chronic illness (Fibromyalgia or FMS - chronic pain & fatigue syndrome) that has me in the Docs office at least once a month and an enterage of meds I have to take every day.

It's not a bash on Dr.s just an observation [Wink] I've been hurt (and of course helped) far more by Docs than guns so far in my life. I think it's interesting to see the difference! [Smile] This is of course, is just accidental deaths, not crime related.
