So I have recently learned how to troll files on Henry's but I would like to learn to do it with a fly rod. All the old timers do it and wondering if anyone can tell me how to set it up. Rod weight, length and type of line setup etc. It may sound odd but it makes the fight way better. At least that's what I hear. I assume it would be the same on any lake. Thanks

My favorite method is on a pontoon and trolling motor. I use a full sink line type 3 from rio.....leader is a furled leader from flygoddess....6 lb ffluorocarbon tippet 12"...then add streamer or bugger pattern....works great. I also use a fly line rio mainstream with 10ft sink tip...Both work well.

If your doing it out of a boat I like to troll extremely slowly in most cases. Sweep the fly rod a few feet forward every once in a while and then let it settle back for added motion. You can get away with a little bigger flies trolling than stripping in my opinion. I usually fish size 8-10 buggers and leeches, but I fish 4-6 when trolling. The purple showgirl is a good overall trolling fly.

I forgot to mention setting up at the top of a hole and letting the wind bounce you through the hole works works well from a pontoon or a boat.

I will be teaching a class in Idaho Falls Fly Tying Expo on the Friday of the show.

The old timers really don't troll. They anchor down and cast, wait, then strip.

I suggest no less than a 6 wt. If casting and stripping a 9' to 10' is great for distance.
If you are casting and trolling, a 7' rod will work.
I recommend a 9' or 9'6" for an all purpose rod.

Line, TYPE III or IV "WET CELL". Reason? Wet Cell forms a belly which is better for weedy bottoms.

Leader: do not need a tapered leader, you are fishing a sinking line. Length however will matter. Try to stay at around 6' max. Reason? Longer leaders will sink at a different rate than your line forming a belly in the leader resulting in missed strikes.

I am sure everyone has there own style, but I am telling you some basic proven facts. And actually simplifying a bunch of stuff.

Now flies....that is another subject.

Thanks for the info. Should be exactly what I needed. I am excited to practice in June. As far as flys I should be ok. Thanks to friendly locals.
