I was wondering if some one could fill me in on the lake trout in bear lake. I was under the impression that they are sterile? Do they still stock them? I looked on the fish stocking report on the dwr website and didn't see anything? Just curious. Thanks.

I believe that they are sterile, and Idaho stocks them.

They aren't sterile as far as I've heard, but they just don't successfully spawn due to the bottom conditions and structures and predation on the eggs and young by other species. Very few would survive to maturity from what I've heard, because of this they are stocked to maintain catchable populations.

All lake trout stocked into Bear Lake from 2002 to date are sterile. They had extremely limited natural recruitment to adult sized fish for several reasons (unique water quality, predation, etc.), but we wanted to ensure they would not start reproducing, so we created sterile fish. The sterile fish go through the same spawning behaviors as fertile fish, but they do not produce viable eggs and milt.

UDWR works cooperative with IDF&G on stocking the lake. The UDWR stocks approx. 170,000 cutthroat annually at a size of about 7"+. IDF&G stocks the lake trout, 17,000 fish annually at approximately 6"+. The stocking numbers that someone posted are accurate. They do not show up on UDWR's website since they are stocked by IDF&G.
