I know everyone is trout crazy in Utah. and I shall be pursuing that species very soon .Being a midwestern transplant I thought id go chasing a species I am familiar with - the mighty northern pike! - Hit Yuba on saturday in my boat. weather was much better than expected and got some serious sun. the Reservior was pretty low based on the water line i could see on the rocks surrounding the shoreline. Me and my buddy figured the south end would be a good starting point with the shallow water and the in-flowing water coming into this end. boy did it get shallow down there fast! saw a guy get pretty far into the shallows and looked to have some trouble but he did manage to get out . water was quite muddy on the south end as well , we cast for a 3+ hours down there with nothing to show for it - then through the narrows - still nothing . once through the narrows heading north the water cleared up considerably ( felt like a different lake) .
my first utah fish ever came casting a deep diving crankbait with the boat in about 18 FOW . It was a Northern not too much over 20 inches . but man did it feel good to get on the board after a tough morning!!!. shortly thereafter .we spotted another crusing the surface in about 20 Feet of water. my buddy grabbed his fly rod and had this Pike give chase immediately. this one was a bit bigger , and we got a real good look at it since it followed the fly almost right to the boat , but took off under the surface instead of inhaling the fly.
they really limit the boat access by the damn area to ensure the shore fisherman have enough area to fish . The steep breaking shorelines make me think this lake might be best trolled - something ill be trying next time down there .
