While down at UL the other day I ran across this strange sight. One of the two was alive and well. The other looked somewhat fresh.
Do you think the fish was caught from the water by the snake, or was it found on the ground having been caught by a fisherman first.
This was about a foot from the water.
That's pretty cool, how big was the fish? My guess is the fish was dead on the bank.

Garter snakes are pretty good at stalking fish under the water. I would bet that the snake was under water around the rocks and found a bluegill trying to use the rocks for cover. The fish still looks fresh so I would say the snake caught it.

I saw water snakes catching baby carp in the bensen marina last year it was pretty cool.

Fish was around 1.25 to 1.5 inches from top to bottom, hard to estimate the length. The body of the snake appeared to be about the same diameter as a large hot dog, but not the size of a Costco dog. Maybe 3 feet in length would be my guess.

Garter snakes hu t fish u derwater all the time. It's the main thing some species of gartersnakes do. We had a tiny pet one my daughter caught like seriously the size of a crayon, and she would hunt the mosquito fish and chublettes I put in her water by swimming under and grabbing them. So fun to watch.
Quite a spiney mouthful, though.

I've seen them catch sculpin from under the rocks in trout streams too.

I've watched both bull snakes and water snakes catch trout from small streams in eastern NV in years past. During years of really low water, they can almost clean a stream out. It's amazing how big an object a snake can ingest. My uncle ran a highway maintenance station near Baker NV for the entire time it was in existence. They had problems with all sorts of snakes stealing the eggs from their chicken coop. They would eat them, crawl to something they could wrap themselves around and then squeeze until the shell broke then go back for more. My uncle made a trap out of a wooden box with a screen over the top and a hole in the side that an egg wouldn't quite fit through. He baited it with a few eggs and checked it every morning and evening. Snakes would go in, eat an egg or two then couldn't get back out. They couldn't get wrapped around anything to break the shells so, when my uncle found them, the end. He caught bull snakes, water snakes, rattlesnakes on occasion as well as a snake we called a blue racer.

Speaking of snake traps I have seen people use their minnow traps baited with eggs around the chicken coop. Same idea. Snake crawls in eats an egg or two and cant get back out. Wish it was that easy to get the mice around my chicken coop. Maybe I need a couple snakes
