So I went to Africa last week to do some hunting. I shot this kudu, which is the fullfillment of a lifelong dream!

[inline DSCN2315.JPG]We had been driving past this hole so I saved a big chunk of liver and put it on a hook.

[inline IMG_0390.JPG]Just as it was getting dark the line tightened up and I set the hook and reeled in this freaky little dude!

Check eel off the life list of species! Yup that is a gun on my back. There were lots of scary things going bump in the night around us. The baboons especially gave me the creeps.

It was kind of fun to fish where the crocs, snakes, hippos, buffalo, leopards, etc, could all mess you up if you weren't careful! Awesome trip. I got a wildebeest, impala, blesbok, springbok, and warthog too. I know a good (and relatively affordable) place to go. One of their lodges is on a pond with thirty pound barbel (catfishish) in it.

What caliber did you take over there?

In honor of my hero Roosevelt, that is a 30-06. 165 grain nosler partitions put all animals down with 1 shot. Extremely happy with its performance.

I think that gun is about the most versatile caliber around, but I bet you raised some eyebrows with that "small" gun for the bigger animals

Thats a beutifull kudu bud!! That trip must have been a blast.!! That eel looks alot like a burbot lol, i also have an 30-06 their an awesome caliber you cant lose with em!!! Thanks for posting your trip.

Any way to look up what that thing actually is? Like a true eel or more like the eel-like fish the Congo and Amazon have?

[#0000FF]My guess is African lungfish. They look like eels and forage in open water...while there is water. But when the water goes dry they bury down in the mud and can hold out for months until the rains refill their domain.

Did you skin it and grill it on a stick over a campfire? Or maybe you had enough "beef".

I'm guessing that was in South Africa. beautiful country too bad it makes Chicago and Detroit seem like peaceful places. Worry about baboons?? Man when I've been out on foot in the Bushveld it's the black mamba and adder puff snakes I worry about. If I'm by water it's the crocs, hippos and Cape Buffalo that concerned me. On the other hand maybe it's best not to think about those animals and just worry about the baboons[laugh].

To me its the baboons. I know what buffalo, snakes and crocs think, they're simple. I wondered if maybe that baboon might grab my rifle from me and shoot me with it. Creeped me out wondering how much cognition is going on up there for them...sort of a potential for a super villain.

I cut that eel up, put the pieces on a couple of 8/0 circle hooks, tied them to 30 pound braid and cast out into the pool. Then I cut the line and tied it off to a big branch. When I went back the next day the line was pulled tight. I started pulling it in and felt some deep thumps and vibrations and a heavy weight, then the line went slack and I pulled it in. Whatever it was had cut through the braid. but awesome.
