Here's the short and sweet- Willard bay, hot fishing for walleye, wiper and crappie, troll fast with shad raps youll catch fish! Wiper everywhere, walleye near the light pole, and crappie in the south marina.... Here's the whole story-Drove up to Willard bay yesterday 5/5. Thanks to the info HYDROFISH gave me I pick up a variety of cranks before i headed out. Mostly blue and white. Got out about 7. First one out of the south marina. Put on a blue and white shad rap as i was leaving the channel. Let out 80-90 ft of line. no planer boards. About two minutes past the channel got my first bite as i was speeding up to head to the island. Lost it. two minutes later fish on, first wiper ever. [inline "P1010296 (2) (300x400).jpg"]
Looked like it was gonna be a good day. Caught one more south of the island and lost a nice crappie at the boat. Decided to head to the light pole, not sure where or what that was til i got there, caught a wiper a minute west of the island, circled back landed another, head back west landed 5 more til i finally made it to the light pole. Catching seemed to slow down. Headed south caught one or two. Gas was a little low, started go back towards the marina, hooked my first willard walleye closer to the middle.[inline "P1010302 (300x400).jpg"]
I trolled around in circles and zig zagged the area and caught a crappie and four more walleye and few wiper. Gas got scary low and had to leave to good fishing spot. Cruised back to the island and started trolling a few hundred yards before i got there, caught a few more wiper and another walleye before i had to use the fumes in my tolling motor to get back. Saw a kid catch crappie in the marina, i tired kinda with no luck. ALL fish were caught on ONE lure trolled FAST, i mean rod bent, fish screaming line fast. Slow did not work. In total landed 12, 12-18" wiper, 6 16-20" walleye, and a 10" crappie, by myself... [inline "P1010317 (2) (400x300).jpg"]
On to today 5/6, woke up late, employee party got a little crazy last night. Retired the lure that slayed yesterday, i had to replace both hooks and the whole thing was falling apart by the time the fish were done with it. Went out and bought three more lures a size bigger. Got out with a buddy around one, hoping we wouldnt get skunked from the weather for the 2nd time. Lake calmed down and the sun came out, to be covered right as we got to the fishing spot. Cant ask for better condition. There might have been 2 or 3 other boats on the lake. Headed straight for the walleye spot. No more than a minute of trolling we caught a wiper, which only meant one thing, rod bending, line screaming and big s were ahead. [inline "P1010339 (2) (300x400).jpg"]
My friend hooked into his first wiper just after. Caught a few more trolling. Then after my friend reels a fish in over 200 ft, he had a little too much line out and i think the fish was sleeping when it got to the boat, we saw he hooked our first walleye of the day and the first hes ever caught. Released. Circled the area and zig zigged, caught 3 more walleye and a few more wiper. Wind picked up and lightning in the area forced us to get out of there. Caught some wiper and two more walleye on the way back before the waves made it too hard to troll. Got in the marina and saw 10 + people standing next to each other pulling fish out left and right. We pulled up, anchored and realized it was crappie, big crappie. We threw on a little grub jig onto a bobber, caught 20+ crappie in an hour. [inline "P1010342 (2) (300x400).jpg"]
Saw probably 100 fish on stringers getting carried off by people on shore. We kept 12 crappie today, managed to only keep two prego females, threw back a bunch of fat belly females. The rest were big males around 12". [inline "P1010345 (2) (300x400).jpg"]
Wish i tried for cats. Awesome two days of catching! And if your wondering, yes its worth taking the day off to go fish Willard.
