So I've been fly fishing about a year now and last week I took my first trip with a guide. My wife purchased the trip from Flaming Gorge Recreation Services for my birthday. (Best wife ever, I know.) Hopefully I can include some useful information in here despite being a complete newbie.

Our guide was Rod Bowden and he was awesome. He estimated that in his 32 years as a river guide he has floated the Green river 3,500 times. He put us on fish fast too! I think in my first eight casts I had seven fish. During the day I lost count of how many fish we caught, I just know my arm and wrist were really tired. My wife was trying to count and figures it was somewhere around 40 fish. I also caught my first white fish which was kind of cool. I know some people think they are trash fish, but I think they are neat.

Most of the fish were caught on olive WD-40's, Rod said they were size 22, and we used a bounce style nymphing rig with the weight on bottom. We switched to a more typical nymphing rig with two nymphs and split shot between them when we got to the shallow areas near the B section. There was only one brief hatch in the middle of the day, probably due to the strong winds we were experiencing, I did manage to bring in a big brown on a BWO while it was going though.

My wife was seriously upset about the lodging up there. It was described to her as a motel room on the phone, and when we got there it was a four bed cabin with no running water. There was a community bathroom and shower across the street from the cabin and no towels were provided. When my wife asked about towels the kid at the desk said, "We have paper towels." Rod apologized over and over even though it wasn't his fault and got us into an upgraded room our second night there. This did placate my wife somewhat.

All in all I really enjoyed the trip up there. I included a couple of pictures from our trip.

Rod took my wife and I on our first fly fishing trip three years ago. He was awesome and taught us enough that we've been catching fish on a fly ever since. It was the start of a great adventure. Hope it's the same for you.

Great report, thanks for sharing. Your post (and the response below it) are exactly why the dumbass in my signature is so wrong. Having a guide who knows his salt can be a boon beyond measure. I'm happy to see at least three more people "get it". I also love the fact that your guide went above and beyond to help you with room accommodations; again, another sighting of the elusive hoax-guide!

Glad your trip was awesome, glad your guide was awesome, but mostly, I'm glad your wife was awesome! (You freaking lucky dog, you)
